I saw a trailer for this before Sherlock Holmes this weekend...looks amazing. And it looks like they are trying to keep it from being Band of Brothers 2.... seems like they're really trying to focus on the differences between the war in the Pacific and the war in Europe, how the soldiers were not only fighting against an enemy that used tactics never seen before, but how they struggled against the elements and themselves as well. Too bad I don't have HBO, I'll have to wait for DVD.

Wow, can't wait. I doubt it will top BoB, but it's the same producers so it's possible. My grandfather was a marine in the Pacific theater. Watching those trailers gave me chills.
hanks mentions robert leckie as a source for the movie - ive read a few of his books - if you ever are looking for a good overall comprehensive history of WWII or the revolutionary war check out his books (delivered from evil and george washingtons war). i wasnt aware that he actually fought in WWII though - pretty cool.
Leckie is one of the three featured Marines that the series follows. He is portrayed by James Badge Dale (24, The Black Donnellys). that's him in the screen cap of the video posted above, Featurette... part of this miniseries is based on Leckie's WWII memoir, "Helmet For My Pillow"
i just started to watch BoB when they started the reruns a few weeks ago, good stuff, i cant believe it took me so long to watch this series, looking forward to pacific
"We plodded through the heat-bathed patches of kunai grass. We crossed rivers. We recrossed them. We climbed hills. We got into the jungle. We cut our passage with machetes or followed narrow, winding trails. We were lost every step of the way." -Robert Leckie from 'Helmet For My Pillow'
if you are a Time Warner or Comcast customer, check your On Demand listings for some sneak previews including a 9 minute airfield scene, soldier profiles, and a 20 minute behind the scenes documentary on the making of the series... you do not have to be an HBO subscriber to access these features. <object width="320" height="240"><param name="movie" value="http://www.hbo.com/bin/hboPlayer.swf?vid=1082163"></param><param name="FlashVars" value="domain=http://www.hbo.com&videoTitle=Anatomy of the Pacific War"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.hbo.com/bin/hboPlayer.swf?vid=1082163" FlashVars="domain=http://www.hbo.com&videoTitle=Anatomy of the Pacific War" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="320" height="240"></embed></object><div><a title="Anatomy of the Pacific War" href="http://www.hbo.com/the-pacific/about/video/anatomy-of-the-pacific-war.html?autoplay=true">Anatomy of the Pacific War</a></div>
Just watched it and what can I say? Fantastic. Simply brilliant. My father fought in the Pacific during WWII and I grew up hearing about the war constantly. Not nearly so much from those involved, but from my contemporaries. It was all the kids of those men and women talked about. We played WWII, taking turns being the Marines, the Army, the Navy, and being "the Japs" and the Nazis. As a result, I've always had an interest in the conflict and have watched every film, every documentary that came down the pike, often multiple times. This series is heaven sent for guys like me.
I thought it was great....BUT would add that the original Band of Brothers I thought started out a little better. There was more character and less action in the beginning, and the character that was developed was done so, so well - David Schimmer, Damion Lewis, Ron Livingston....By the time the action started, felt a little more invested in the character. Nonetheless, great great first episode tonight. The series is going to be great. Having watched Band of Brothers just last month, what this series is clearly going to do is portray how different the war in the Pacific is. The scene with the Japanese soldier in the river was great.
Yeah, it was. So was the incident immediately preceeding it, which was a BIG eye opener to the guys as far as just what they were going to face with the Japanese soldier. I won't say what that was, but I'm sure you know what I'm talking about. We need to be careful about describing what folks haven't seen yet, and use the spoiler thingy.
well, i figured people would expect to see Japanese soldier and water! but i'll start using spoilers. I will say the action scenes were fantastic. almost seemed better then Band of Brothers already - maybe better flim-making technologies??
I dont get HBO at school, I'll have to wait till next week to see it unless someone has a good online link.
