    Astros out of Tejada sweepstakes

The Astros are out of the Miguel Tejada sweepstakes.

"It's over," an Astros official told FOXSports.com Sunday night. "We told them we're not dealing with them anymore."

The Astros' frustration apparently stemmed from their belief that they had a Tejada blockbuster in place Friday night, only to have that deal and later proposals quashed by Orioles owner Peter Angelos.

But there may have been another issue.

The Astros, according to a major-league official with knowledge of the discussions, feared that the Orioles would flip their most prized acquisition for Tejada — Astros right-hander Roy Oswalt — to Houston's cross-state rival, the Texas Rangers.

The Orioles, according to the official, intended to trade Oswalt to the Rangers for a package of three players — third baseman Hank Blalock, Triple-A shortstop Joaquin Arias and one of the Rangers' top pitching prospects.

They also would have ended up with two other players from the Astros — third baseman Morgan Ensberg and shortstop Adam Everett — effectively making the deal a 5-for-1 for Tejada.

Presumably, the Orioles then would have spun one of the third basemen, Blalock or Ensberg, or shifted one of them to first, while moving their current third baseman, Melvin Mora, to the outfield.

For the Astros, losing Oswalt to the Rangers would have been a public-relations nightmare, evoking memories of when Nolan Ryan went from Houston to Texas. The Astros had similar concerns when Roger Clemens was courted by the Rangers as a free agent last spring.

The Orioles still have a chance to make a similar deal with the Rangers by substituting Tejada for Oswalt, the official says. But barring an unexpected twist, that might be their only chance to complete a Tejada blockbuster.

The Angels, who offered the Orioles a package of right-hander Ervin Santana and Triple-A shortstop Erick Aybar for Tejada, also have pulled out of the Tejada discussions, the official says.

The Dodgers are not actively pursuing Tejada, other sources say.

This is a joke, right? Why are they shopping Oswalt? He's just about the only sure thing we've got these days.

is this accurate? how trustworthy is this?

i don't believe for a second this trade was proposed from the astros and the only reason they backed out was because they were going to send oswalt to the rangers?

I feel the same way. It seems like this will hurt our chances of re-signing him. Hopefully im wrong.

    Geez,

The Astros must really think highly of Pence and Hirsh, to offer Oswalt instead of either one of them.

Or, Pence and Hirsh are being built up, but aren't that good.

Tejada's good. But he's not Oswalt/Ensberg/Everett good let alone Oswalt/Ensberg/Everett/Blalock/prospects good.

I sincerley hope that this offer was never made. Purpura would have been dead to me.

That said, if true, the Orioles are run by a bunch of Jackholes. From leaking proposals to drive up the price to trying to trade a player they don't even have behind our backs, that francise is seriously lacking in the class department.

these stories sound too out there. they just don't make sense. we go from ensberg, everett, and nieve to an insane quantum leap with ensberg, everett and oswalt. then they say we backed out because we believed the o's would trade roy o to texas. I just don't believe we were really offering oswalt. and I sure as hell don't believe we ever offered berkman. these stories don't make any sense. they just seem like writers saying crap.

DING! DING! DING! you nailed it. I don't think we proposed oswalt but I do think the o's were jacking around on us kind of like how mike james was.

that guy is on crack....they just trying to put the rumor out to sweeten the deal so they can get more from other teams....come on...ensberg and everett is reasonable...but adding the only consecutive 20 game winner the last 2 yrs into the deal also....i don't think so....Roy got a TRACTOR from Drayton......shows u how much he likes Roy.....so he ain't going no where unless it's retirement....

We need to circle the wagons.

No trades. No rumors. Stand Pat.

I am sick of bending over for the national media and other teams. We need help, but we can fix our problems from within. Tejada is not the solution. Soriano certainly isn't. Can you honestly see these guys in an astro's uni anyway? If you wanna trade, trade some midlevel prospects for some relief pitching.

No leaks, no speculation. Just ASTROS (the good, the bad, and the ugly).

posted this in the other thread. Stark's most recent report was posted in this thread. Did no one else catch that he said we offered Oswalt, Berkman, and Lidge? What sense does that make?!?

If the Astros seriously offered Oswalt it tells me that there is some serious disfunction at Minute Maid. Either the the team isn't confident that it can re-sign him, or they seriously overvalue Tejada. I'm on record as saying that Oswalt shouldn't be untouchable, but only for the mother of all deals. I hate franchises like the Orioles. How the mighty have fallen.

It sounds like the Orioles are leaking bull**** and making stuff up because that is one of the worst run franchises in baseball.

I wouldn't trust a word coming from their mouths. They try to drive up Tejada's price so some team would be stupid enough to actually offer upper-echelon talent for tejada. Unfortunately for them, no other team is that stupid.
