Because Modi has serious fascist tendencies and is a strong Hindi nationalist and supremist? That would be my guess as to why.
To be completely fair, India would not exist if the British never came and exploited the various kingdoms on the subcontinent. South India to its credit was never absorbed by the Mughals. But the British desire to get the raw resources of the subcontinent led to modern India. Or Bahrat. Or Hindustan. Or whatever they’ll call it.
