Yeah, we all hope they win some World Series titles in the coming decade. Need we remind ourselves *again* of the list of prolific Hall-of-Famers, bona fide giants in the game, who never won a World Series or even got there? Or how they underperformed in the postseason? To rehash *again*, neither Bagwell's postseason failures nor those of his teams takes away from his merit as one of the best 1B of all time, and the greatest Astro of all time. It doesn't *add* to his legacy, but it doesn't *taint* it, either. Not if you have any sense of the game's history. One day, we'll all be telling our grandchildren about how we watched Bagwell and Biggio play together. Just like your grandparents may have told you about watching Mantle, Mays, or Musial.
Can somebody lock this thread or change the title? There is absolutely no truth to it and it's kind of disturbing...
Apparently you didn't read the rest of my post... Yes he did, not as the primary player anymore, however, but a complimentary player. It took mainly our pitchers and a new breed of Astros to lead the way, Bagwell had just become another player. Kind of like David Robinson relegated to a 'role player' and having Duncan lead him late into his career to a couple of championships. Nothing against him or Bagwell, both great and terrific players, but Bagwell was not exactly known as a postseason player; he was the opposite of a post-season player, in fact. I like Bags a lot, but my only wish is for the Astros in the future would have better luck/achievments than they did during Baggie's era, which wasn't a terribly successful one IMO, just mediocre.
Some people here probably think we waited too long to get rid of Nolan Ryan. And, yes...HORRIBLE thread title.
Agree. I would like to know if Ted Williams/Ernie Banks would have done better had there been a wildcard system in existence. Maybe not, I don't know how their teams finished - just curious.
I love the respect shown to arguably the best Astro ever, and the best 1B ever in the NL. He's a Hall of Famer and will be the first guy to go into the Hall as an Astro. He's overpaid this season because he played his ass off until his shoulder blew out on him, which unfortunately coincided with the end of the backladen contract that he took (done that way to save the team money). I'm so proud of what both he and Biggio have accomplished and brought to the Astros in their time here, and it upsets me to see people kick the man when he's down.
seriously...this thread should be closed. the title is misleading. just because the thread starter is uninformed doesn't mean the rest of us are. anyone that keeps up with the astros knows bagwell was getting a few days off after his start. there is no new information included. this is a waste.
fair question...Jeff had 24 hits in 106 post season AB's with 13 RBI's Ted had 5 hits in 25 post-season AB's with 1 RBI. I don't think Banks EVER played in a post-season game. Post-season stats just aren't given the same scrutiny in baseball that they are in other sports.
Not sure about Ted, but Banks' Cubs won as many as 90 games just once in his 20 year career. The Astros have been far, farm more successful during the Bagwell/Biggio era.
I have been an Astro fan all my life (born in 70) and I liked Bagwell but never really connected with him or became a big fan. I think it's because he has such a boring personality. I don't think he is the greatest Astro ever by a longshot, but I wish him the best though. I'm not sure if he really means that much to the city either, like some try to make it seem. After 86 the Astros became more boring to me for some reason.
hah...yeah, i'm uninformed. i was merely making an observation. it isn't my fault the thread got off topic. i feel that there's more than meets the eye than him just "resting" for 2 games after his start. he got no action at first that game, and apparently the only throw he made was tossing it back to the pitcher after a pickoff attempt. get a clue, loser. is it really eating at you that much as you sit at home that a thread on the rockets bbs is sitting there unlocked with somebody's speculation that the end might be coming for bagwell? get a life. posters like you is everything that's wrong about bulletin boards.
