Durv, It is ok to have a different opinion about Morey, you don't have to defend him at all costs...lol.... As for Lin, he should be held accountable, it is 100% his job to notice talent, and to foster it and keep it. I don't care if other GM's missed him too, 2 wrongs do not make a right. All I care is that our GM and Coach can recognize talent, because if they can't (Lin cough cough) then we need a change. DD
That's not the point I'm getting at. Kyle Lowry is already all-star caliber without a large community behind his back. Considering how close Lowry was to getting the spot, wouldn't it be reasonable to say that if he was Asian he would easily be an all-star? My point is that all-star is just a label, Jeremy Lin becoming an all-star won't make him a better player than Lowry.
Fair point. 80% of CF recognized that Lin was outplaying Flynn just from the scant playing time he got. To say he wasn't beating out Flynn in practice would be either ignorance on Morey's part or willful deception. Probably some act of Karma that let Lin slip out of Morey's fingers and get picked up by the one team we didn't want to have a winning record.
If we had held onto Lin, you'd be a fool not to try to flip him for a superstar, right now....being that we would be too deep at PG to keep them all. Or does Les tie Morey's hands and force him to keep the Chinese golden goose, again. In fact, I wonder if Lin and Amare would land Howard right now?
Hold on. You actually do need a genius Moneyball GM if you want to tank, or at least if you don't want to be tanking for a decade. The Clippers have had many more high lottery picks than the Thunder, but OKC better in spite of this handicap because the Thunder were smart with their resources and the Clippers were foolish. You need to maximize your chances of drafting superstars with each high lottery pick. Once you have them, you need to find diamonds in the rough (like Parsons) to get valuable trade chips on your roster. Then you need to make smart trades to fill holes in your roster and make your team well-rounded. (like Perk for Green) Through it all, you need to shift players in and out to keep your cap situation healthy (like the Spurs) or you won't be contenders year in and year out. In fact, the only situation where it's NOT good to have a genius Moneyball GM is the one we're in right now - where said genius is able to find enough steals in the draft and trades to keep the team afloat at .500
If we had kept Lin, there would be no Linsanity. Even if he had played an eventual backup role, he wouldn't get the hype here. No way you could land a superstar with him. I'm pretty sure Lin wouldn't land a superstar even now after all the hype. Can't imagine his value being any higher on the Rockets. And no, I don't think anyone wants Amare's contract right now. I dont see the Knicks taking in Dwight and Hedo either given their payroll. The Magic have much better options. Jeremy Lin doesn't make difference.
Well, the first time they got Kobe, they didn't bottom put to get the Shaq Kobe combo after Magic, Kareem and Worthy were gone. They traded Vlade for the 13th pick to draft Kobe and got Shaq as free agent. But I think the current CBA restrictions make the Shaq type signing much harder.
You implied a "basketball guy" would have gotten Lin more than a "stats guy". Durv simply pointed out you have no evidence to support this made up hypothesis. This is the same as when you claim Morey's treating players like assets is bad for the team - again, evidence points to the contrary. As it does with Lin, where basketball and stats and every guy in between passed on him. He only got PT in NY because of injuries. He was a hair away from playing overseas for a few years until he proved himself. The interesting part is that you're a business owner yourself. Surely you don't gauge employee performance entirely based on what did happen and didn't while they were employed by you?
Maybe the Trail Blazers count too. The Drexler era to Rasheed era saw an almost entire remake of the team, without ever missing the playoffs,...and a 4th Q collapse away from a title. Talk about managing change smoothly.
JVG was a good coach but the NewYork trades weren't good. If you think CD was good then you must love Morey because he's a lot better GM than CD.
My overall opinion of Morey right now is B-, as I said in the other thread. He's made solid, low-risk manuevers, but he hasn't been able to land a star even though that's been his expressed focus for a number of years and his rebuilding strategy is looking worse and worse by the day. That said, if I I had your particular views which you've repeated over and over -- he alienates his players, he doesn't know how to recognize talent, he doesn't know how to negotiate deals, etc. -- I would give him a much lower grade than that. If there was evidence that a lot of people were high on Lin's star potential before all this happened, then I would be much more pissed off about letting him go. Instead, it appears that no one really saw this coming (except, ironically, some stat-head delivery man who blogs once in a while for hoopanalyst.com). "2 wrongs don't make a right" is completely missing the point and frankly doesn't make sense in this context. This isn't a matter of ethical right/wrong, but being able to weigh the pros/cons of a situation and make the right choice. If we're talking about maybe firing someone, then absolutely you should consider how others would do in the same situation. Its fine if you want to call for a GM change over this. I just think you better have a good reason to believe the new guy you're bringing in would have not only recognized Lin's talent, but would also have been so convinced in his star potential that they'd bring him in as the 15th man with 3 other players at his position having guaranteed contracts and 2 of them being quality rotation players. Good luck in finding that guy.
Morey mentioned a player in this year draft that will transform a franchise but couldn't throw his name out, I'm assuming he means Anthony Davis right?
Your first paragraph is what I have been arguing for for a relatively long time now. The Rockets should get a basketball guy for a GM and let Morey, if his ego can take it, back up that GM. He can not blame Les and others for the Rockets' failures forever, he is paid big money to do what he is supposed to do, and take responsibility for the Rockets hits and misses since he took over as GM. And if he does not share the owner's philosophy then he should resign or just leave like Adelman.
You don't fire a GM to "hold him accountable". You do it when someone better is available. Name the GM who wouldn't have missed on Lin. Give me a name.
You're right... but they did have two losing seasons (33 & 39 wins) after Magic's first retirement. I think Daryl said remaining a "winning program," which I'm guessing he means over .500 (that is, if there are parameters for what he's referring to as not having been done before). That offseason by Jerry West has to go down as one of the greatest ever. Landed Shaq (after who knows how many months of tampering) and made a brilliant trade with the key piece that would become expendable with the signing of Shaq.
Yeah I was wondering about that too. Both Nola and Bobcats are sucking big time, but if the Bobcats win the lotto, you can book it they will draft Harrioson Barnes by hook or by crook, and imo he is the reason why Jordan finally started the rebuilding process.
How on earth does that come out to a "B-" for you? Sounds like a "D" would be generous. If Morey literally didn't make a single move throughout his entire tenure here, how much worse off would we really be right now?
