Are you asking rick to sign one of the best Defender and the most expensive player in the league ..? I don't think so.
Free safety, strong safety, they're both safety positions. Nolan can play the SS and Quinn can move to FS. Allen will step in as starting CB and draft picks plus a FA signing will step in at the other CB spot. The Texans must rectify their pass defense starting in the backfield. Pollard is as good as gone. The guy has seen the writing on the wall: the Texans are going no where. So why stick around?
that is the most asinine idea I have ever seen Starting street trash like Allen alongside the worst starting CB in the NFL in Jackson and moving your only competent cornerback to another position would make the secondary even worse (if that is even possible) they need to keep Pollard and Quin and bring in a new cb and fs
In a competent secondary, Pollard is flawed but fine. He's a great hitter, is one of only two effective blitzers on the roster, and can occasionally help out on big TEs. In the Texans 2010 secondary, he was a can't cover guy surrounded by can't cover guys. Suicide. His role should be reduced, but he's valuable in running situations. Getting rid of anyone (even Jackson or McCain) when we already are under pressure to fill numerous holes is foolish. Strong CB allows Quin, Allen, and Jackson to platoon the #2 WR and Slot cover spots. Capable Safety allows Nolan to help in passing downs and frees Jackson to blitz or shadow the TE. Worthy NT makes life easier on Smith and Williams, and frees up the LBs to blitz. The only starters on this defense that can probably be discarded with no regrets are Okoye and Wilson. There are very real, very important differences. In general (discounting goalline and prevent situations), FS is your cover safety and literal last line of defense SS is coming forward and watching for the run first Strong safety (typically) lines up over the TE and his responsibilities are some combination of run support, TE coverage (seam routes), blitz, or QB shadow. On LB blitz packages, they're the most likely to take on the blitzer's responsibility. These guys need to be able to lay down heavy hits - no thin dinky grabbing DB types. You can put guys like Quin back there in dime packages, but you don't want to do so every down. Jackson is the only halfway viable candidate to try out as SS. And I haven't seen him show nearly enough as a hitter. The FS types should be your INT machines that have the best range - centerfielders.
Quintin Mikell, Dawan Landry, and Roman Harper are FA's. All are big hitters and good in run support but they can play in coverage. It'd be nice to get someone like Landry, who's had a chance to play with guys like Ed Reed and Ray Lewis. I don't think he's so high profile that he's totally break the bank.
Because the guy sucks as a CB does not mean he can or should play SS. He can't cover in zone and he can't cover in man, so why put him at SS and have him cover deep on 3rd downs and other passing situations? So to bring up earlier: How would you make the case that getting rid of Jackson would be regretful? The guy makes Jacque Reeves look like Champ Bailey. Our pass defense was terrible and the only remedy other than drafting shut down corners is to find a FS who can create interceptions. Quinn is our best option right now. Worse than having the 32nd ranked pass defense is having the 32nd ranked pass defense that creates only 13 interceptions (3 by way of a 3rd string rookie QB).
Get a saftey who can lock down the center of the field in zone, and play man fairly well. If we could find a FS like that to play next to Pollard, we would have a fantastic combination. Otherwise, he's a liability. Rahim Moore would be a great draft. I've heard rumors of Champ Bailey wanting to play FS on the team he signs with. There are some possbilities out there.
I assumed thats why he wanted to change positions, but it he really looking to start extending his career during year 16? Now seems as good a time as any.
