hey man i realized you applied as disadvantaged, if you dont mind sharing what kind of disadvantage/hardhship did you undergo?
100% Economic. I grew up in public housing, and I was the class below working for the first 17 years of my life. My mom and I lived on about $5 a day. Then I got a scholarship, and a college education.
Its going to be all the sweeter when you are making 7 figures as a neurosurgeon. You are living the American Dream. My brother is an interventional radiologist in residency right now and he is set to bank pretty soon. But be careful on your USMLE's. Alot of my friends who went to American medical school made 80ish % on their Step 1, but all my friends who went to Caribbean schools made 95% plus on their Step 1. Keep the focus, but I'm pretty sure you will.
wow dude, congrats..John Hopkins is second on the nation only after Harvard med.. it has been a dream of mine along with Baylor College of Medicine.. hope you make the best out of it.. I've seen your md-applicants profile and it's truly impressive. what I'm wondering though is how could you fit in all your hospital volunteer hours into your busy college schedule? did you do it in the summer? oh, and how are you only 20 years old?
Congrats azadre, you must have worked really hard to get this oppurtunity, it's obviously paid off....
Congrats man! I have a real medical question for you: I am 22 years old, yet I get massive heartburn almost everyday. I have no doubt that this is because I eat spicy food (I love spicy food). Ever since I started law school, the issue has gotten worst because I am now living in San Francisco and there is no cheap places around me to eat (ie nothing with a dollar menu). Even the Burger King out here costs $8 for a meal (WTF?! It's BK, no one eats BK down in LA!!). Since I live alone and I can't cook, my secret is that I marinate everything in hot sauce and that way it tastes good when I eat it. So am I causing myself a great deal of injury by doing this? I have tried to research some stuff about possible problems but too much medical fluff hurts my head. On top of all that, I only average about 4-5 hours a sleep 6 days a week. The only day I get a good nights sleep is on Sunday. Can I continue this for until May 2011 when I graduate law school without causing myself permanent harm? How long can I continue the sleepless nights before I am causing myself great harm (just in case I decide to do a big firm job and have to meet the billable requirements)?
To OG: Most research suggests that the substance that makes peppers spicy (capsaicin) does not increase your chances to get heartburn, meaning your safe with the hot sauce. However, it seems like you are eating greasy foods every day, and you likely keep getting acid reflux from this food. A quick look down the esophagus to look for signs of inflammation near the entrance of the stomach is how this could be diagnosed. If you eat foods light in fat or grease, then the problem is likely something else. As for your sleep, you might age yourself faster, but it will not cause any direct harm in the next 20 years. Your body uses sleep to repair, and you are getting the major repair time. However, if your daily performance suffers because you're drowsy, then get some more sleep.
I was pre-med in college too. Did lots of volunteer work, research, etc. Then, I realized that I get super queasy around blood... and found that touching sick people would be gross to me. I had a few friends who got into Pharmacy because of that.
Azadre, One day I will need you to fix my face because it is so beautiful that the ladies won't leave the the thadeus alone when he is trying to eat some delicious pizza and read the Dear Abby column in the newspaper.
Congratulations man! I'll be going to Baylor College of Medicine next yr and am looking into anethesiology; perhaps we could work together in the near future?
Congrats Azadre. I thought for sure you would've either killed somebody or been in prison by now, but I see you've proven me wrong. Good luck and do well.
Cool, thanks for the advice. I do eat greasy foods (pizza, burritos, quesadilla, fried chicken) so I will try to cut back on the grease. Good to know that I don't have to cut back on the hot sauce! I will try to see my doctor in the next few weeks if I find time in my schedule. In exchange for the advice, I will give you one FREE malpractice suit! So if you ever need someone to defend you (and believe me, you are going to need it with all the tort laws out there), just create a thread about it.
