This is correct. All it would take is a FRP and not one of our best ones and filler. Ayo would be a long-term fit and they would be able to re-sign him. I advocated heavily for him at the deadline. If Stone is saving assets for Giannis, I’m done with this team and the NBA.
Ayo is going to be an all star. Just needed that door to open. Reminds me of a young Lowry mixed with Maxey.
I’ll admit, at the time If DFS and a first worked, probably would have been worth it, as long as it’s some kind of a protected first of course.
The Should Have been very doable line up post trade deadline: Sengun (30 minutes) Jabari (30 minutes) Amen (30 minutes) Durant (30 minutes) Smart (24 minutes) Ayo (26 minutes) Reed (27 minutes) Eason (18 minutes) Okogi This team wins 60+ games. Too many games were lost like the Lakers debacle due to not having that pg vet leadership. Ayo doesn't complain playing 6th man minutes. Ime making them play Bataan death matches is why you see Amen taken to school by Marcus, plus the increase in the role of the offense. Defense was going to naturally fall off.
DFS + a first probably would have been worth it for Ayo, both to get rid of DFS salary and to get Ayo's partial bird rights and re-sign him in the offseason as a good young player to fit with our core longer-term. I'd imagine the reason Stone didn't do it is the same reason for everything he does, he is obsessed with maximizing value and probably felt trading DFS then and giving up a first to do it would be selling low, and believed DFS would bounce back and regain his trade value if we just stuck with him instead. Now it looks like DFS may just be a sunk cost (although there's still a chance he gets back to something like his old self next season, I guess). And we missed out on Ayo.
Can I challenge this statement? There are only a few trades he’s done, and a giant chunk of them show that he in fact sells low. Here are assets he traded away at lowest ever value or acquired on the precipice of rapid decline: - Durant acquired at the most rapidly declining phase of an asset. - Jalen Green traded at the lowest value of his entire career. - #10 pick traded at its lowest value from the day we had it. - Fred Van Vleet obscenely overpaid after his most criticism-filled season in Toronto. There are definitely good buy-low projects. Adams trade price was good even though he was a rapidly depreciating asset. Brooks - only in hindsight - was a good asset he created but it was very high risk and the first year salary was questioned by many. Capela, Okogie. I would describe him more as a bargain basement hunter but not good at maximizing asset value.
#1 rule is to not trade a FRP or any picks for a player becoming unrestricted free agent. We could have traded Tari/Jeff Green for Dosunmu
I wasn’t a fan of Coby at the deadline, but felt like Ayo would have helped. To think we could have gotten either for modest resources is frustrating in hindsight. Either would have helped in this Lakers series.
Ayo feels like the kind of young guy we could've offered a 5 year contract and he would've lived up to it. Filled a need this year and for our future a PG, since FVV isn't sticking around forever and Amen is just not a PG. But still glad it didn't happen since I don't need any excuses for Ime to stick around nor for KD. Let both piss off soon.
How can they resign him when he is a UFA? Esp with his play currently lol. I dont like losing FRPs for rentals even if you do.
KD is a max player who has produced at roughly the same rate the last 5 yrs. Rapidly declining is a stretch. Jalen Green is a bust and def has less value now than when he was traded. 10th pick is the most valuable piece in that trade and was a necessary sacrifice to dump Jalens 100M contract and also upgrade to KD. FVV is Udoka's golden child so w/e.
I had to go back and recheck the math - Tari and one of the minimum contracts (Tate, Okogie, Holiday, Green) worked cap wise and left them with enough to sign a 14th player to a prorated minimum for the rest of the season to satisfy roster requirements. I wanted Dosunmu in the 2021 draft instead of Christopher or Garuba, I also mentioned him as an option early in the season, as a replacement for an injured FVV .... Not sure Chicago would have taken Tari and one of the minimum's above over the deal they got. Might have had to add a #1 pick to make that happen, problem is, they didn't have one in this draft and they'll probably be swapping with Brooklyn next year in the 2027 draft. Would you have given that Brooklyn pick or a 2028 #1? Also has to be considered if he's a rental or someone you want to resign .... I think the latter is pretty obvious, he's played very well.
He's a UFA.... The Twolves gave up assets and will then have to out bid any other team. We can still get Ayo in the offseason..... However, we should probably see how the playoffs continue to go for him as it would be silly to overpay for a guard based on a hot playoff series, which wouldn't be the first time in the NBA.
I think the reason is he didn't want to commit to having to resign Ayo or any player when there is so much uncertainty surrounding the roster. We forget, but there are players every season that the GARM blames the FO for not getting. And we can still sign Ayo in the offseason or S&T.
I like Ayo a lot, but giving up a 1st round pick to acquire him three months before he hits UFA is insane. And for what purpose? Even if we got past LA we'd clearly get demolished by OKC or SAS. We are not an Ayo away from contention. Chicago received no good offers for a reason. There are actual contenders out there that could use him and none of them bit. Detroit and Boston literally have all of their first round picks and they went for other Bulls at a cheaper price instead, Huerter to Detroit and Vucevic to Boston. OKC has so many 1st round picks it's insane. They actually traded our 1st round pick this year plus three 2nd round picks for Jared McCain. Why would Presti do that if he could get Ayo for so much cheaper? Is McCain as good as Ayo right now?
