If our nation loses young men's lives in a rushed, ill conceived and incompetently executed plan is that not wasted? It may tragic to acknowledge but it may be the truth. I sometimes wonder if we don't perpetuate the aura of honor for our fallen soldiers duplicitously in order to keep up the recruiting quotas. If we admit that the highest levels of our government can make stupendously bad judgements that lead to high body counts among out troops, how long will it be before kids just don't sign up? Saying "the kids were wasted" is summarily condemed because it pulls back the wizard's curtain and threatens the power structure, not because it isn't a valid point of view. (you might guess that I was of draft age during Viet Nam and don't trust the Department Of Defense to make good strategic use of American lives)

On the other hand, John Kerry pressured Ronald reagan into granting legal US residency status to over a million salvadorans,during an illegal war in the 80's;Yet Kerry is considered a traitor by the right wing?.
