Smart analogy? Lol. Right. There are plenty of better quality coaches out there right now than Avery J. Player of the month doesn't mean anything if you're not a super star. You either fired a coach or trade a player that is a poison to the locker room or team.
Avery Johnson has been overrated as a coach, but it is unfair he's being blamed for the Nets woes. With that said that's how the NBA works. Once the players stop hustling for you, you will get fired

... Maybe it was not the coach, but the players. D Will and Joe Johnson are overrated players. Both their stats have been declining and the Nets record is indicative of their poor play. http://espn.go.com/nba/player/stats/_/id/1007/joe-johnson http://espn.go.com/nba/player/stats/_/id/2798/deron-williams Joe Johnson has been on the decline since the 2006-2007 season. The Brooklyn Nets did the Atlanta Hawks a favor buy taking up his 6 year 119 million contract. D Will has been less efficient every year. Brook Lopez is a offensive monster, but his defense is suspect. Gerald Wallace is nice swing man and does all the little things, but is not a reliable shooter. In Brooklyn, D Will has Reggie Evans and Kris Humpries in the pick and roll offense, whom are definitely no Carlos Boozer or Paul Millsap. In Utah, he had Kyle Korver, Wesley Matthews, Ronnie Brewer, CJ Miles, and AK. Now he he is surrounded by streaky shooters. However, the coaching can be blamed for playing Jerry Stackhouse instead of Marshoon Brooks. His nickname is "Baby Kobe" afterall.
lol people think it's actually his fault? Avery Johnson was coach of the month in october and november...was bound to hit a rough patch.
Avery Johnson is not a great, long-term coach. His style makes players tune him out, especially veterans with big egos. That said, this type of firing is generally not good PR. It smacks of knee-jerk reaction and overestimating player talent. And except for veteran coaches looking for cash grab, any other coach should stay away from it just because you're asking to be fired a year later. And for people who thinks Sloan's a good fit, Sloan cares about floor spacing as much as any coach in the NBA. The Nets players suck at shooting.
Can it get much worse... another Brook Lopez injury aside? While they have no chance of taking out the Heat, if Deron Williams can get anywhere close to what he was, and Lopez, Johnson and Wallace can at least play smart, somewhat efficient veteran basketball, it SHOULD be a competitive team. Best case scenario still has them behind Heat, Spurs, OKC, Clippers and probably NYC and Chicago (with healthy Rose) and Boston for the next year or so, but are those teams losing their coaches anytime soon? If you are not currently coaching, want to be, are a big name coach and presumably are thrown a boatload of cash and are a fan of the NYC metroplex area, then it isn't a bad situation on the whole.
It is better than most other available jobs in terms of team talent and financial resources. Teams that are doing fine typically don't replace their coaches.
You have a rich, Russian owner. That's about it. An OK, capped-out roster with a low ceiling(imo, in terms of going/getting anywhere). Tried like heck for Howard, not sure what more they could have done there. OK now, I guess it could have been worse had Deron left? They could have spent their money on the Johan Petro, Jordan Farmar and Travis Outlaw's of the world again.
Dude, if you ever meet Deron Williams, keep him in front of you. He does not mess around when it comes to backstabbing.
Brooklyn and money. Problem is, unless Williams starts playing like he did in Utah, that team can't make it far in the playoffs.
