Apparently that photo was taken at the beach where the shark ate the guy (although from the news today I'm not so sure) - and the paper reported that it had come back to the same beach - which would mean it was probably looking for another feed... (although, again, having seen the news it seems that the shark hasn't been spotted lately - could mean the photo was taken before the authorisation to terminate was given, or that it was the tele doing a beat-up...) I think that if it is seen near that beach (or other popular surf beaches) then it definitely poses a major threat and needs to be taken care of in the same way that man-eating lions (etc) are taken care of. It is probably that an animal which eats (and likes) human flesh once will repeat the act.
I may be wrong, but I seriously doubt that sharks have taste buds. It'll repeat the act only because of an available supply of food, not the taste
I think that sentence of mine was a general one about animal eating theories --> I also have no idea whether sharks have taste buds - but I guess the repetition of the act is the problem!
The problem is....they want to kill the Shark that killed this young man. In going about their bussiness.....they will kill any shark that looks big enough with no proof its the right one untill they get back and cut it open.
White sharks have little or no sense of taste whatsoever, but their olfactory acuity is nothing short of remarkable. This shark has made a meal of a human, and unless he got a real upset tummy over it, he will now associate that smell with food. As an apex predador, we need to do something about the wholesale slaughter of the world's sharks because of their importance to the whole food chain, but common sense and little bit of knowledge on white sharks dictates that this shark does need to be killed. From some of what I've read about this particular case, they shouldn't have too hard a time isolating this one individual.
