But FYI, 90% of the bars RM95 and I mentioned are walking distance from each other. I don't drive to go out anymore.
That' so anti-Houston! No car? That is really cool. I had no idea that anything existed between downtown and the Med Center. All this stuff must have been thrown up in the last eight years.
It did, and it is awesome and still growing. The main section of Midtown establishments are those surrounding the Spec's warehouse downtown. You really need to see it next time you are in. As I said, look at those mag links I provided.
no i hang out with people in htown who say they wish they were back in atown. i guess the way the world works is based on your job and occupation. you can randomly hit hippies in houston too. but you might mistaken Katrina victims for hippies, then they would pull out their gat and pop you. or you can get car jacked when driving up to deliver goods for katrina victims. or what about those ms13 gangs? oh i miss houston already! im more of a breakfast taco person. houston is all kolaches.
RINGERS in austin is awesome. good food, nice waitresses. ALL HD Plasmas and 100ft projection screens.
I've lived in Houston for a year now, after moving from Austin. I lived in Austin 8 years. The only thing I miss about Austin is that it's just easier to get around. Houston is HUGE compared to Austin. Austin is more liberal, younger, and smaller. The trade-offs are no affordable suburbs, bad job market (plenty of young talent pouring out of UT every year, wanting to stay), and lack of some of the amenities that a larger city has. Houston, on average is more conservative, but there are HUGE pockets of areas even more liberal than Austin. Housing in Houston is cheaper, way more options for suburban life if raising a family, and the job market is much bigger. There's plenty of stuff to do, but sometimes you have to look for it. In the end, it's big city vs. small city. I was sick of Austin when I left, and when I visit it doesn't feel like home. Houston grows on you! People grow up here, go off to school (no large, major unis outside of the dreaded U of H), and come right back! I've never lived in a non-small town where there are so many natives.
this hasn't always been the way...but it seems to be now. much more so. in my area of town, there's a huge repopulation of people who grew up here moving back in and putting their kids in the same neighborhoods and schools they grew up in.
I opted out of the big city life. I have come to the town that is routinely compared to where Austin was in the mid-80's. College town that is dealing with growth.
Tinman - don't you want your kids to go to a fine public school like Bellaire, or do you want them to grow up with all that trailer trash in Westlake.
Austin's population has grown over 40% over the last 10 years. The infrastructure has not been able to keep up. You want bad traffic? Austin is terrible. Other than that...its cool.
Houston has it's problems, like any major city. But the positives far outweigh the negatives. - Texas hospitality (one thing I always hear from people visiting is that Houston fold are some of the nicest around) - Restaurants (Austin is not even close and never will be, Houston is a very diverse 4 mill+, I think we have every type of restaurant known to man x10!) - Sports (You got three pro sports teams all w/ dedicated owners who want to win accompanied by three of the best sporting venues in the country, plus you got two major universities with decent to great programs) - Accessibility to the coast ---- The most common problems associated with Houston: crime, traffic, smog, ugliness (concrete jungles and billboards). Eh, you're gonna find those problems with any major city. Also, I seem to notice that the city practically shuts down after midnight (aside from the bars and clubs). Some of ya'll just seem to think Austin is God's gift to Texas or something. It's fine if you're proud of the place you live, but don't go saying Houston is a big s***hole but Austin is this utopia. I for one wasn't too impressed the times I've visited.... it is a pretty town though, geography wise.
Southside chillin dawg! Respek! And the best thing.....no pasties on the breastises or stupid stripper licenses hanging off their ankles!
oh accessibility to Galveston, i'm packing my bags to move back to Htown now! Austin is Utopia compared to Houston. I've been in Htown for 20 years, there's no comparison. Houston Sports.. Let me tell you that if you go to a Longhorns game, every fan would know good detail about the players. You go to a Rockets game and they can tell you about the Oil and Gas market more than they can tell you about Juwan Howard's track record with Chris Webber. I'm not saying Htown is s###hole, that's San Antonio. but Atown is by far better than Htown for living and quality of life.
You got to be kidding. Try I-10 at rush hour. Try driving from downtown houston to the burbs, because that's what 'houstonians' live. I actually lived in the loop, but people would drive from Pearland, Sugarland, the Woodlands, Clear Lake, Katy.. fm1960 (whatever that place is called). Been there done that. i'll take mopac and 183 any day.
I scoff at those that compare Houston traffic and Austin traffic -- Houston is worse x 10. I was just in Houston on Thurs and trying to get out I-10 back to Austin was hell -- much worse than the problem spots of Austin.
I'd say they're about the same.. most Longhorns I know hate the fair weather fans that seem to be falling out of the sky right now.. in the late 80s when the Longhorns stunk, UT averaged what, 25K a game? When the Rockets were rolling hall of ffame squads left and right, everybody in the stands could tell you what was up.. It's the same for most places in Texas.. don't try and paint such a lopsided picture.
