Um, sure you do. Midtown (Woodrows, Red Door, Tipsy Clover, BW3, etc.), Rice Village (Baker St., Gingerman, Brian O'Neills, Woodrows...Kay's and Volcano further north), and Downtown (Live, Flying Saucer, more bars that I don't know the names). Most of these places are just as cheap as what you get in Austin.

As far as outdoors stuff, yes, I'll admit Austin is better. Sure, you're going to be hotter in Houston due to the humidity, but unless you're just a gigantic p***y, it's not that much worse. Even my ****** will be out Sunday afternoon playing softball at 3:30 and 4:30. I'll live. Not to mention, we have one of the largest urban parks in the nation, access to beaches and a couple nice lakes as well. Great golf, too.

Ok, when people are hyping outlet malls for shopping (*snicker*) and a restaurant where you can also fill up your car with gasoline (Rudy's), I give up. You guys don't have an appreciation for nice things, I guess.

by the way - Rudy's is a chain. They're all over Texas.

Austin is a wonderful place to live ~ i've really enjoyed myself here and I lived in H-town for 20 years.

I love Houston, but I would never move back.

i live in tarrytown, which is basically just west of downtown, and absolutely love it. reminds me a lot of the memorial area of houston. very wooded, very nice homes, almost a suburban feel but your only 5 miles from downtown. it's very quiet for the most part, higher income families.

but there's all sorts of places in austin that are very nice.

I lived in Austin for 5 years. I wouldn't trade away my memories of Austin for anything in the world. Magnolia's, Coopertank, West Campus, Lake Travis, Ironworks, drunk college girls, amoral college girls, jogging in Town Lake Park, live acts by bands that don't make it to Houston, and SXSW.

Lots of stuff 2 love about Austin. The place definetley has a personality of it's own.

But I've always felt that the only thing that Austin has over Houston is weather and topagraphy. If Houston had Austins weather and hills a debate about both cities would end in milliseconds.

To illustrate: I could never find any decent chinese, vietnamese colombian, or ethnic food. Not like Houston. Austin definetly lacks the "ethnicity" element. Speaking of which I always felt that Austin was slightly segragated. Black on the east, mexicans in the south, whites in the north, and college kids sprinkled around depending on what thier economic situation is. I know you can say the same about any other city in America but at least in Houston I can go to the Galleria or West U. and see some black/asian/latin folks.

Though I love 6th street, it definetley lacks the glamour and pazzaz of some Houston clubs and bars. 2/3s of the kids on 6th street would get turned away at the door at any establishment in Downtown. Finding an after hours club is impossible. Also, midnight movie screenings is foriegn concept in Austin.

Houston has better "culture" scene. But that's just coz we have more money and funding for the Arts.

And Finally, Austin is overpriced for a City its size. Housing especially.

...oh and some posters (bigtexx) might think that Austin's strip clubs lack the "quality" entertainment that some of local favorites provide.

    tex,

we appreciate the better quality of life, thats why we dont live in houston.
i did my time in htown, its not even comparable.

i had a nice office way up in those big buildings downtown htown, an apartment off kirby, etc..

    it still sucked.

every hardcore houstonian who's made the move up here agrees with me.

born/raised in H-town. Hated Austin and hearing about how fricking great it was from everyone who moved here. Loved H-Town and all it had to offer, it was huge, tough and had character. Until I moved to Austin. Been here 10 years and everyone was right. Best city in the state, but I am liberal. If you've ever used the phrase "too liberal" you may hate it here. My folks/family still live in H-town so I'm there alot. There is no way in hell people are nicer in Houston than Austin...no way.

    1. dont forget Austin City Limits festival
    2. they are working on the food part. they are building a huge chinatown off lamar. i totally agree, houston dominates in this area. thats why they should bring some establishments up here, cause there is huge demand for asian food
    3. 5th, 4th, congress ave, south 1st.. thats where all the noncollege kids hang now. we dont have to wait in long lines to get into clubs. I couldnt stand that about houston. its freaking houston, not LA, not NYC, not even close to Las Vegas.
    4. the reason why real estate is so high is because people in Dallas, San Antonio, Houston, and LA are moving to austin cause they hate their big city life. I hate that its so expensive too.
    5. bigtexx must be a businessman, because thats what the clubs in houston cater too. at least in austin, the girls seem to enjoy their job more.

Why are we even comparing the 4th (or 3rd depening on who's counting)largest city in the USA to a very large town? It should be more Austin vs. Portland/Athens/Boise/ or even Mephis/Nashville. It's apples and oranges.

I love a great "big city" skyline and Houston is far beyond Austin in that category.

Glad someone else mentioned it. I rarely venture away from MidTown anymore. I even moved next to it so I don't have to worry about driving.

In Midtown, you can also add: Bond, Christian's Tailgate, Continental Club, Deco, Doghouse Tavern, Escobar, Farrago, Front Porch, G.R.A.B., Hue, Ibiza, Komodo's, Leon's Lounge, 702, Little Woodrows, 518, Pub Fiction, Red Star, The Fish, The Light, and Wet Spot.

Here's a couple of mags dedicated to Midtown. If y'all ever look at these, we're in them quite often.

Not sure what people's ages are commenting, but I had a girlfriend in Austin that I still see from time to time. I've been to Austin a dozen times.

6th Street is for kids. Period.

4th street is where you go if you're over 25. They have a good delection of bars, but their aren't many I'd enjoy, and the whols thing seems quite small to me.

It all depends on your tastes, however. I enjoy lounges, sportsbars, and clubs. I enjoy being in the "know" crowd. A lot of people aren't like that.

Austin is definitely better if you enjoy being a fly on the wall, or enjoy quiet settings. Austin is also better if you like live music. I for one, don't.

Absolutely false. Could most people you hang out with prefer Austin.

I couldn't live in that City for more than a week without punching a hippie.

If you prefer it, that's great. You probably prefer granola, too.

I haven't lived in Houston since 1998. I don't recognize any of these bars. What is considered Midtown? Houston changes faster then any city I have ever seen.

The only other problem with Austin is the lack of Saturn V's.

Yes, but Austin has the only clothing optional park in the state of Texas.
