So I have seen my doc who performed my last knee surgery and I got a MRI done a couple weeks ago to see how my knee was doing. I've been having a lot of persistent pain and I just figured it was arthritis getting really bad. He also had me take a blood test for some other joint issues I've been having since he was worried I might have some sort of a rheumatological issue. I don't feel like I am, but I had no problem with doing the test.

I was supposed to have an appt with him tomorrow, but he called to give me the run down of the MRI and blood test. I got all the information I needed to out of him, but I wouldn't have found out I have a bone marrow edema (the major cause of my pain) if I didn't keep asking him questions about the MRI and that really irritated me. Also, he wasn't even looking at the MRI when he called me. I had to continue to ask questions before he got up to look at the MRI. Further, he didn't even tell me how long the recovery from bone marrow edema can be....it's SIX TO TWELVE MONTHS and you still might need surgery. He just told me to rest it for another month and maybe think about getting crutches. His general advice beyond that was just to try to live with my knee pain which is the same thing he told me 3 years ago. Also, he said some of the blood tests came up a little high possible rheumatological issues, and he said I should probably see a rheumatologist. I've already booked an appt with one, but I still don't feel like my issues are of that nature. I don't have inflammation or major episodes of pain. However, my thumb and toe pain hasn't gone away completely with rest, but it gets a hell of a lot worse with use.

Anyhow, I need some orthopedic surgeon recommendations for here in Austin or even in Houston. I know my mom said to consider Dr. Walter Lowe in Houston. He's the team doc for the Rockets, Texans, and Cougars. Hell if I can get good advice I'll go anywhere. I'm not looking to have surgery, but after living with this pain for so long I feel like it might be the only answer. I was originally only looking for recommendations on rehabilitation. Thanks in advance for any help!

I can't vouch for this, but I've had Carey Windler highly recommended to me:

I think they also do the surgeries for UT athletes, but I'm not positive about that.

(I had already gone somewhere else and didn't need surgery, so I never followed up and visited the guy - that's why I can't vouch for him)

    this is my doctor.

he worked on my torn acl. he went into detail about what was happening with the knee, how to fix it (surgery) or just live with a deficient acl (no surgery, but limited movement). overall i liked him.
