Austin is Texas' drunkest city. Dallas is most sober.

USA Today has a good story on a report studying the drinking habits in America's 100 largest cities. Texas has the honor — dishonor??? — of having three of the ten hardest-drinking cities in the USofA.

We've pulled out the Texas results to come up with a list of the "drunkest" and "most sober" cities in the Lone Star State, along with the grade given to each city by Men's Health magazine and its national ranking (with "1" being worst and "100" the best).

    Drunkest
    1. Austin (5) F
    2. San Antonio (7) F
    3. Lubbock (8) F
    4. El Paso (24) D
    5. Corpus Christi (25) D

    Most sober
    1. Dallas (77) B-
    2. Fort Worth (55) C
    3. Arlington (53) C
    4. Houston (47) C-

I contributed my part during my 10-year stint in Austin. When I was in b-school, I was getting wasted 4-5 nights a week.

Odd to me that most of the "drunkest cities" are in warm weather locales.

The magazine, which will publish the list of 100 major cities in i's March edition, drew upon such data as death rates from alcoholic liver disease, booze-fueled car crashes, frequency of binge-drinking in the past month, number of DUI arrests, and severity of DUI penalties.

Those are some freaking terrible metrics, which is why Boston was the most sober, and NYC the 8th most sober. People in NYC and Boston either walk or cab when they go out, so the DUI-related stats are much lower than cities where people have to drive everywhere.

    "Drunkest" cities:

    Fresno, Calif.
    Reno, Nev.
    Billings, Mont.
    Riverside, Calif.
    Austin
    St. Louis
    San Antonio
    Lubbock, Texas
    Tucson
    Bakersfield, Calif.

    "Least drunk" cities:

    Boston
    Yonkers, N.Y.
    Rochester, N.Y.
    Salt Lake City
    Miami
    Newark
    Durham, N.C.
    New York City
    Fort Wayne, Ind.
    Manchester, N.H.

Most of these surveys aren't made very well. I think for one of the Fattest Cities in America surveys one of the factors in seeing how "fat" a city was, was how much green space it had and fast food places per capita in a city. Of course Houston wouldn't compare to a place like Seattle in that regard.

New Orleans is the drunkest city the U.S., and it's not close.

Maybe during Mardi Gras, but year round, the students on UT campus put away an ungodly amount of beer. 6th street is like a mini-Mardi Gras every dang weekend.
