What a great weekend of live music! Sunday was particularly awesome, especially on the Black stage. Here were some of my favs from the weekend. Friday *Arc Attack: Live Tesla Coil Show - this was just simply cool for being unique *Weird Al Saturday - arrived later than I wanted and missed The League of *Extraordinary Gz and Power Trip (who I heard was awesome) *Invicible - one of the best hip-hop shows of the weekend *Slick Rick - purely for getting to see a legend *The Dwarves - awesome, high energy performance. loved it! *Man Man - good stuff as expected *Gwar - I refrained from being soaked in "blood and semen" this time. still a spectacle any metal/punk music fan must see. got to see them at the autograph signing too. seeing Gwar on golf carts was amusing in itself. *RJD2 - seen him before and he did not disappoint *MGMT - was never a big fan, but I loved seeing them live. I've got a new appreciation Sunday *Indian Jewelry - caught one song as I was walking in and was impressed. I would have stuck around, but I was there early to catch Eagle Claw. *Eagle Claw - Austin band that tears is up! these guys are heavy hitting instrumentalists. will definitely be catching up with them again. *Junius - kinda reminded me of Deftones. I dug it. *Peelander Z - these guys are on another planet! the band got the audience involved by tossing out drumsticks and metal bowls to beat and then REALLY got them involved by inviting a few people onstage to play their instruments. they even took the entire drum kit into the audience and performed in the middle of the crowd. their music sucks, but it was one totally entertaining. *Black Nasty - they aren't black, but damn they are nasty. Eric Wright (aka Eazy-E) is definitely an influence as they have a song about him. *Kylesa - 2 drummers?? wow, the music at this show was HARD. cool stuff. *Kaki King - she's got nice sound, beautiful voice and is pretty attractive. nice relaxing show to mixup my rather heavy day. I'd definitely see her again. *Pharoahe Monch - another nostalgia play. fun, but not really feeling the hip-hop acts. *The Bronx - very impressed by the energy and hard hitting sound. I'll be checking them out again for sure. *High on Fire - these guys ripped it up. I missed their first couple songs to check out Deerhunter (who sucked), but was glad I got there in time to catch a good chunk of their show. *Suicidal Tendencies - I've been wanting to see these guys for ~20 years and I finally got the opportunity. They had the biggest pit I have ever seen at a show. Mike Muir and Co. brought it hard and fast! my highlight was getting on stage at the end of the show. S-T!!! *Mastodon - sound was off on their first song, but it came together into a blistering show for the 4 songs I heard. *The Descendents - very awesome to see this legendary band. I don't know much about them, but thoroughly enjoyed the couple of songs I got to hear. *A-Trak - squeezed in his DJ act at the very end and was pleased. it was fun hearing so many of my fav old school beats mixed together in a high energy show. a great way to end the weekend.
Weird Al was UNBELIEVABLE!!!!!!! I cannot stress enough how freakin' awesome that show was. Arc Attack was definitely cool. The Gories stole the show for me on Saturday. I really enjoyed Valient Thorr and MGMT impressed me. Sunday was all about Polvo...and the lack of DEVO. Good times. Honestly, without DEVO this was the weakest year for bands at FFFF. Hopefully they ramp it up next year.
weird al was the best thing i saw all weekend and it wasnt even close. that dude works it. all the al tv stuff was great too. and more costume changes than madonna. ariel pink was my favorite new discovery - dance-punk psych-glam - the singer was like bowie, but gayer - and that band was tight yo! dirty projectors - ive seen them 7 or 8 times and that was unfortunately the worst set ive seen from them - the sound was kind of bad, but the band seemed a little sloppy too - if you have never seen them dont judge on that show. best coast was great - i like the album, but they are better live. wavves was good too, but again the sound was bad - vocals and bass kept cutting out. os mutantes were much better than i though - they sound way different than i expected, but it was cool. polvo amazed me too. not sure what was weirder, gwar or big frida, the transgendered MC w/ the stage full of booty-shakers. not a descendents fan - i actually left early - im old and get tired easily these days.
