Wow, here's some astonishing news! God, how I hated this guy when he was with the Celtics, and always wished he was with the Rockets. Didn't like what I read about a possible affiliation with the Spers.

    NBA Development League

Ex-Celtics star Johnson to coach Austin Toros

    By Mark Rosner

As an NBA player, Dennis Johnson had a reputation for contributing whatever was necessary to help his teams win.

A defensive stop. A rebound. A jump shot.

As the first coach of the Austin Toros in the NBA Development League, Johnson hopes to teach young players the value of such diverse and flexible skills.

"My reputation is as a defender," Johnson, 50, said on Friday after he was introduced as the Toros' coach. "But I tell people there were times that I averaged 19 points, 18.5 points. If you watched me play, or watched the guys I played with, nobody ever did one thing. That's what made us successful."

Johnson, a guard, won three NBA championships during his 14-year career. The first was with Seattle in 1979, and the others came with Boston in 1984 and 1986.

He was a five-time all-star and a member of the NBA's all-defensive first team for six seasons. He was voted three times to the all-defensive second team. Johnson averaged 14 points and five assists for his career.

One entry missing from his résumé is induction into the Basketball Hall of Fame. Johnson was nominated, but not approved, this year.

"I just don't get it," Doc Rivers, the former NBA guard who coaches the Celtics, told the Boston Herald. "He was a complete player."

Johnson said he would welcome the honor of election to the Hall but does not need the recognition.

"I've said this many, many times: I don't need to be validated, not in basketball," Johnson said. "I've won three championships. I was on the all-defensive team (nine times)."

Johnson has been an assistant coach with the Celtics and Los Angeles Clippers. He was interim coach of the Clippers for 24 games in 2003. He coached the Florida team in the development league last season. The team finished 17-31 but won nine of its final 14 games.

The Toros, who moved to Austin from Columbus, Ga., do not yet have a roster. The league's draft is on Nov. 3 and the season begins for the Toros 22 days later.

Each of the D-League's eight teams will receive two players as territorial allocations before the draft. For the Toros, the players might be former Texas Longhorns.

Toros owner David Kahn said he looks forward to the NBA affiliating its teams with clubs in the development league this season, he hopes. An NBA spokesman said on Friday that a plan is still under consideration. Once approved, the Toros are likely to become a farm club for the San Antonio Spurs and perhaps three other NBA teams.

Under the new NBA labor agreement, teams are allowed to send players to the development league during their first two seasons in the NBA.

Note: The Toros will hold an open house and youth clinic today from noon to 3 p.m. at the Austin Convention Center, where they will play home games. Admission is free.

I won't watch this team once if it's affiliated with the Spurs.

It's bad enough that we're wrongly placed in their ETJ.
Hopefully, the Rockets will be affiliated as well, if the comment on 3 or more teams being affiliates is true.

I agree. I also agree with the keeping the state of Texas thing. It looks like a sissy drew the outline of the state.
