Schlotzsky's is really good. But it's a rip-off a place called Schmaltz's in Waco. Schmaltz's, believe it or not, was making that same "original" sandwich that Scholotzsky's sells decades before Schlotzsky's ever opened up. If you are ever in Waco...stop at Schmaltz's. There are two locations. Incredible sandwich...one of the few things I miss about Waco. Oddly...when I was at Baylor in the early to mid 90's, the first Scholtzsky's they opened there produced the most revenues of any Scholotzsky's in the chain.
I've lived in a town with a Schlotzsky's for about ten years and eaten there once. It was alright. Pretty overpriced, but I might try them again since they'll probably go out of business soon. With all of the other (better) sandwich places in town, I'm suprised they've been able to stay in business this long.
Scholotzsky's, Subway and Quizno's are aweful now. They all serve you a lettuce and bread sandwich with a few thin slices of meat on 'em. In the past, I've found that the best sandwiches come from mom-and-pop businesses. Anybody know of any good, affordable, independant sandwich shops inside the loop? -- droxford
They built a nice new Schlotzsky's by my office with about 6 Apple IMacs for surfing while you eat. And all of their restaurants have wireless access. Too bad their sandwiches are overpriced.
First, as I said, if you haven't gone to Zero's, go! They have 3 locations in downtown. Their sandwich's are similar to schlotzski's, but are 10 times better. Also, try out Kahn's deli in the village. Their sandwich's cost between $5-$9 bucks, but they are awesome. Another eating option is the Bagel dog at the Einstein Bagel places. I like 'em. Jersey Mike's is crap, as far as I'm concerned, but a lot of people like them as an alternative. There's one near Kirby and Rice.
That's exactly right. I've contemplated the thought of opening up a sandwich shop of my own; I make some killer sandwiches, with products from across the globe.
Brown Bag Deli, Westheimer and Shepherd. Also, Kahns, as Fatty recommended, on Rice Blvd. in the Village Just outside the loop in the Galleria area is Kenny & Ziggy's New York Deli....HUGE sandwiches, but large prices to go along with them. But it is good.
I know. I'll never figure out why it went belly up. Kids from Bellaire had been going there for lunch since the 60's. Try Zero's. Closest thing to Zappo's these days.
There used to be a Schmaltz's in Houston. I think it was on Richmond and they served a mean Muffaletta.
I read this and I'm not a scholtzsky's fan...I'm more of a Subway guy...Don't really like Quiznos either... If I had a choice, I'd not do sandwiches all together, but time usually dictates this...
I understand. I only go there every so often due to the same thing, but their sandwiches are enormous. My problem there is that I take time studying their huge menu and I always wind up ordering the same thing....bowl of matzo ball soup and a hot corned beef sandwich. Oh well....one of these days I will expand my horizons!
Good stuff. Waco food is actually decent for a town it's size. George's, Health Camp, Barri's (ever eaten there?), La Cabana Mexican over off 6 by the mall, and there's some burger joint that I can't remember the name of.
That's me! (I also get a Vanilla Shake....yummm). We always stop there on our way into town. Reminds me that I need to hit 3-bros bakery for some kaiser roles next trip.
classic!!! Health Camp still makes me laugh. that name is just funny to me...particularly considering the food they serve. there's also this little dive out in the middle of nowhere called the Rock Creek Cafe. Amazing burritos..good food. yeah...there's not much I miss about Waco compared to Houston. but good memories, for sure.
