See, I whole heartedly agree with this. Except that while a good single player game may be "timeless", its isn't for you. Based on what you said, it is timeless because it is a great game. So "People" will continue to play it for a long long time. However, the question is, how many times can you play the game?? Twice? Three times maybe? four if its a really great game. But realistically, not much more than that...
When you find a good online game, you can play for months, years on end without it losing its appeal. Take Age of Empires II for example, I played that for at least 2-3 years before I moved on from it.
Again, not saying a great single player game isn't worth it. In fact i wish there were more quality campaigns on games coming out. Single player games that you can really get into are worth more than most multiplayer games IMO. Although, i still believe theres a greater lifespan for a good multiplayer game.
That certainly can be true...but the games I've most enjoyed playing (in single player) I can see myself going back to play again someday....like the movies in my dvd collections. I don't just watch them once and never again. That's probably why I almost never trade in games. There's at least that option that you can go back and enjoy the campaign all over again one, two, 10 years down the line (so long as the system still works).
I see your point, but don't necessarily direct that at me. I enjoy replaying some of my favorite games even when only 1-2 years have passed. This is especially true if a new game in the franchise is coming out. I'm probably in the minority there though. Personally, I'm not sure I could play a single game for 2-3 years no matter how fun it was. I place a high priority on the amount of gameplay I can get from a game, but after some point, it becomes a little excessive. The satisfaction I get from a great SP game is much more than what I could get from continuing to play the game (through multiplayer or whatever). Once I'm done with a game, I'd much rather try to find another game that would deliver another amazing experience rather than stick with the same game for 6+ months. For example, once I was "done" with the SP campaign in MGS4, I thought about trying it online. But instead, I wanted to play other games, such as Mass Effect, PixelJunk Eden, and SMT: Nocturne. And once I finish those, I'll want to play Disgaea 3, LBP, Resistance 2, etc. I suppose if I didn't have a near infinite amount of games that I want to play, I'd place a higher priority on getting more bang for my buck in each game (essentially an infinite of gameplay through online multiplayer). This was sort of touched on earlier I guess, but to put things more simply, I suppose you could think of a good online mode essentially offering an insane amount of replayability to a game. Of course, if you think the game sucked, this isn't going to help. If you don't care much about replayability, it won't matter much to you. If you prioritize replayability, then perhaps it will mean a lot to you. While I do replay some games over the years, it is generally to refresh my mind about the story or something along those lines. I generally won't replay a game to check out a harder difficulty level, to get all the unlockables, to see a different ending, or just simply to get more gameplay. MGS4 was a bit of an exception, although it was more so I could better understand the different gameplay mechanics...and so I could better understand the story.
Sorry, didn't mean to direct it at you. I just meant that as in you the original consumer, not you RC Cola
Yeah, I know. Just wanted to make it clear that I personally didn't feel that way, although I know in general, most people are probably like that.
