I asked this in the last Atkins thread, but got completely ignored.. I hope someone will help me this time.. Does anyone know a store in Houston that sells Atkins brand products? Namely the chips, bread, and candies all in one place? Every time I want Atkins chips I have to drive all the way to Beaumont, it's getting pretty old.
DonnyMost, I know that Randalls here in Austin has an aisle with a bunch of their products. I will ask my wife where she got the stuff. DD
Does anyone know where to find those Ketostix? I've asked at Kroger and Eckards and they looked at me like I was wasn't wearing pants or something.
I get mine at WalGreens. And Eckards has them but you need to ask the pharmacist not the front desk. DD
Wifey says best place is WalMart, but the Randalls on Brodie and Slaughter has a good selection too. DD
thanks.. but walmart is hit or miss.. I've been to at least a dozen walmarts in the east texas area, and only one of them had a halfway decent selection of stuff.. none of which included to the two things I love the most (bread and chips).. I guess i'll have to keep going to beaumont.
Well I was going to start this diet last Monday but decided to put it off till the 2nd so that the holiday food would not do me in. Walgreens has the Ketostix and a very little bit of Atkins candy and powdered drink. Have been getting rid (read eat) of the high carb foods around the house. I am 262 lbs this am: 5' 9" so we will see how it goes starting tomorrow morning. Have already tried the flavor water like DD suggested and they are bettter then expected them to be.
Man, this plan will work wonders for you. I was 6'0" and 260 when I started (3 years ago) and I got down to 210 at one point. Since then, I've hovered around 220. I'm around 225 now, so now I'm back on it and I'd like to get as close to 200 as I can. Don't judge your success by how many pounds you lose, judge it by how your clothes fit. I only weigh myself about once a month. Good luck!
I went on the Zone diet--which is basically Atkins light. Key difference is you don't have to cut carbos quite as much (though severely the first 2 weeks) and Sears (Zone guy) wants you to get your fats from things like Olive Oil, nuts (almonds especially) and Avacodo to the degree possible. I went on the diet mainly for cholesterol/blood lipid--figuring one last diet (low fat was an utter failure) approach (last gasp really) before I would be on the path to meds (e.g., statins, "Lipitor") down the line. Here was my results after 6 months with no major other changes (no meds, slightly more exercise but not that much different)--dropped my tryglicerides from 320 to 80, improved HDL (good cholesterol) from 38 and 43. While my LDL and total cholesterol didn't change much my physician was very pleased with the HDL/tryg changes. Side benifit, I lost probably 12 pounds and a few %'s body fat. I'll go for a 1 year post diet physical in about 1 month and will see where I am at (hopefully similar to the figures from 6 months ago). Similar story for falling off the low carb wagon as Dakota. Visited Houston and hit my fav resteraunts I have missed since leaving--e.g., Churrascos, Pappadeux, Double Daves (plus a lot more beer)--I gained about half the weight I had lost over a 10 day period. Took about 3-4 weeks to get back, no biggie. I would also suggest you get one of Sears's Zone book for comparison. I have some from Atkins and Sears, and they have similar ideas but the Zone is a little bit more moderate with the same impact IMO.
Felt bad first 2 days, but by day 3 I started to feel outstanding. The body stores a 2 day supply of glucose and since you are starving it of glucose it is trying to get you to get some more. In a couple of days it will kick in and start burning the stored glucose...ie fat. Hang in there it gets REAL easy. I am at 186 and dropping pounds and inches. Had Chinese food for lunch and gonna go grab some fajitas for dinner.....WOOOHOOO !! Oh, Cohen, I now live in Cirlce C also....Circle C on the park...do you know where that is? DD
DD, When did you relocate? We live close to Kiker too. We looked at some homes for sale in the Park a few months back, but we like some areas out 2222 by the Lake. Won't be moving anything now with a second li'l one due next month though.
Thanks for the recommendation. I read it years ago, when I weighed less, and was thinking about it as I read Atkins. I should review it to compare.
I can recommend the Zone diet as well - I lost about 15 pounds on it over the course of 4-6 months...but I rebounded. It definitely works, but I found it very difficult to balance every meal. In addition, eating 4-5 small meals a day seemed to teach me to eat often, which didn't help when I went off of it. I feel like I have more freedom eating on Atkins. However, I think when I get to the lifetime maintenance stage of Atkins, I will be fairly close to the proportions of fat/carbs/protein on the zone. ....well, maybe with carbs at 20% instead of 40%.
Cohen, Moved at the end of July. I made a killing on my last house, and rolled the profit into the down payment on this house. I also got a fixed 30 years rate of 4-7/8s. First time in my life I bought at the very bottom. DD
Congratulations, and welcome to the neighborhood. FWIW, I refied for 3.875%. We know we won't be here for more than 5 yrs, so we did an ARM. I sure would have preferred locking in a 30 yr at 4 7/8s (if we were in a house we would be living in longer).
DaDakota, That Atkins white bread is nasty. It's not the taste, but the consistency as you chew. I ate it about an hour ago and still feel queasy.
As far as the cholesterol question and triglycerides...make sure that you add plenty of good cholesterol to your diet. I would eat either a can of tuna in oil or an avocado every day to try to counteract any bad cholesterol in my diet. It worked out really well and when I had my blood tested, my cholesterol and triglycerides were super low. If I could do a search on it, I would, but I can't so maybe an admin could dig up that old thread?
