I just finished reading this thread, the results that yall are giving are encourging. Im 6'3 220 and may want to drop maybe 15-20 pounds in the near future. I made a decison to quit drinking soda and only drink water. A week into it, I havent missed it one bit, Im starting to really love drinking water. Thats basically what Ive done in a weeks or so time still eating the same maybe - a few snacks here and there, I was 224 a week ago so I guess that plan is working. Ive never dieted in my life so this would be a drastic change, I just wanted to say keep the updates coming coming Im for one defintely interested....BTW is all of the information you need in the Atkins Books? I plan to buy that probaly in the next few days

What I have gotten from this thread is AWARENESS
Trying this diet [DAY 4 today] I have notice how much Carbs I eat
    [Bread Esp]
How many Sodas I drink [Approx 3~5 a day]

Even If I did not do the whole induction thing
I don't think I could go back there
    [hopefully]

I'm not really measuring weight as much as trying to
    SEE results

I would recommend to anyone who is interested in this to read the book - it's only like $8 in paperback. It also explains why fat is necessary in your diet.

Other answers: Ketostix can be bought at Walgreen's and probably other pharmacies. I had to ask for them at the pharmacy counter. You just need the basic ketostix that measures ketones - they had some other one for people with a medical condition.

If you want support, advice, recipes, and to read some success stories, I recommend the following site:

    http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com

I'm 9 days in now and I've lost 1% of body fat and about 6 pounds.

    Good luck on living healthy!

    GS,

I remember when we watched a game at Barry's, you didn't look out of shape or anything. But I'm glad it's working for you.

    Rocket River,

Same here. I've been wanting to drop a few lately, get into great shape for October... I'd never really thought about the specifics of foods and what they did, what they were good for, etc. I knew the basics, but that's about it. Now I actually find myself reading the labels and I'm actually concious of what I eat. I've cut down on my general intake, and have lost a few pounds in the past week. Yet I haven't yet tried the Atkins diet. I'm thinking I will give it a shot next week.

Do you know whether it would affect concentration levels at all? Also, how much energy does it leave you for sports? If you tend to do a lot of them, would it be a better idea to obtain more carbs than the usual Atkins?

    Hey guys/gals,
I just started Atkins, and after only 3 days, lost 5 pounds.
This of course, includes getting a fairly decent workout the last 2 days, but I've been more livelier and feel a whole lot more energetic. Will continue to post results.

Is there a certain book I should get, or is there just one book out there that everyone uses.

    Coma,

I have not been sendintary at all. I play basketball 2-3 times a week, and softball once a week.

I also have 2 boys, and they keep me busy.

I have lost 12 pounds now am down to 193, and am feeling great.

I do not miss the sodas and I have not been eating lots of meat. I have been eating salads, fish, chicken, pork chops, broccili, cheese, eggs, sausage, & hamburgers....etc...etc...

I just cut out the breads, tortillas, pastas and sugars, and so far so good.

People are always talking about induction being bad for you, but millions of people have done this diet, and I think the results far outweigh the minor risks.

I feel great, lots of energy, and am a lot more aware of what I put into my body.

Keep up the good work fellas.

One thing to note, is not to watch the weight so much as the inches...I took neck, belly, and waiste measurments and will post them after my 2nd week in....those will be more telling then weight.

Concentration levels have been MUCH better since I cut out Dr. Peppers.....no caffiene....the first 2 days were a bit rough with withdrawls but now...there is no going back baby !!!

    DD,

Would you recommend not doing sport or intense activities during the first couple of days of induction? Also, when do the concentration levels start to go up? Does it affect you in a bad way during the first two days?

From what I've read on the bulletin boards, it seems to be worse if you have a serious carbohydrate addiction. It's very important to take the multivitamins as well.

The book is called Dr. Atkin's New Diet Revolution.

DaDa, what are your plans for staying on induction? Are you going to stay another week or two?

    Yesterday I ate:

a whole loaf of french bread
    a veggie sandwich
    5 pieces of toast
    3 big bowls of cereal
    amongst other things.

i think i fit under the "serious carbohydrate addict" stigma.

    Ace,

Nah...I would not do anything differently in the first 2 days, just do normal stuff.

Gutter, I am going to go to phase 2 and add some carbs and keep checking my Ketostix to make sure I am burning fat.

Hmmm... what about when you need to do work? As in, mental activity? Is it difficult to concentrate during the first few days? Also, could someone remind me what foods to eat/avoid when taking considerations such as essay writing?

I was looking into this diet for myself and my wife who has Diabetes and Ulcerative Colitis. The one thing that is keeping me at bay is the Ketosis. In all the body chemistry classes I ever took, this was not a good thing. Ketosis if it lasts to long can be very damging to your liver (I have a liver condition) and can lead to a diabetic coma.
    Please guys, be careful.

    Hey guys,

Man, is this effective. I've lost a few pounds already, feeling generally quite healthy - eating loads more veg than usual. Also, I'm so much more educated about what goes into my body. I think it will help me live a healthier life in the long term, with what I know now. I also do not feel tired or mentally exhausted. Highly recommended - so far, so good!! It feels great to be doing something, having a goal and actually getting closer to it! And I don't have to really kill myself doing it.

DD, how is it going with you?! Thanks for posting all the info about this by the way. I know a lot is available online but I suppose here you feel as if you are getting it from "friends." It helped me to learn more and get off my butt to do something. Cheers!

    Atkins diet?

Eh, I don't know if I would do that. I remember watching that "Bull ****" show on Showtime, and they explained that is really just a form of starvation...

I've been on a diet since June. I've decreased my calorie intake and increased my calorie outtake. I've made sure that I don't eat anything that could be too fatting, and I try to eat the bulk of my food around lunch to give me some time to burn some of it off. The biggest part of it all is that I've been exersizing a lot. I spend around 6 hours swimming each day and around 3 jogging. I guess being 17 and not having a job helps too...

Thus far with my diet, I've lost over 35 pounds, and still going. I started around 185 and I'm at 150 right now. My goal is around 140, but actually I feel great at 150. I hope that you reach your goal, but you should be sure to be careful.

I bought the book and have been reading it and it says the diet should actually be good for someone with diabetes. I'd reccomend you buy the book, read it, then discuss it with your doctor.
