DaDakota - my ketostix were purple for the first time today. Woot! I don't have much to report on the weight loss side, but I haven't had any desire at all to snack, which is very surprising for me. How are you and your wife doing?

I think you're supposed to be able to determine that you are in ketosis when your breath starts smelling funky.
BTW Rocket River, if you're new to Atkins, I think it's important to know that there are a large number of people, including many knowledgable researchers and physicians, who believe that the Atkins diet is harmful. I don't want to argue for or against either way, cause I don't know really, but you can read up on the other side here and make up your own mind. The Physicians Comitee for Responsible Medicine is a fairly well respected group. Of course that doesn't mean they arent' wrong, but at least they're not nuts.
Encouraged by others success I started Atkins today. I'm probably close in build to DaDakota. I'm 5'9" and currently weigh 209 which is the most I've ever weighed. I'm shooting for 165 but will be happy with 170 and fit. I'm starting light exercise today and I'm also giving up the rum and diet cokes. I'm a Meat and Potatos guy so I'm just going to cut out the potatos, bread and rice. I don't have to cut many vegetables since I don't eat many any way. I think I'm also going to start taking a daily vitamin which I have never done before, but have probably needed to for a while. I took 2 photos last night and was surprised at what a Fat Ass I had become. Wish me luck. I'll keep you updated of my progress.
Awesome Voodoo...good luck and keep us posted. Ottomaton, yep, there are people who think it is a bad diet. And I would suggest talking to a Dr. before you do it. However, when the Dr. says it is bad, tell him ok...then it is better for my body to be in Glucosis then, right?? This usually gets them to thinking that Atkins is not all that bad. By the way, I am using it to get to my weight and then I will adjust my diet to maintain the form I want. DD
I love it. DaDakota's a doctor now. BTW, I'm not for or against the diet, I haven't read up on it mainly because I would never do it (love my bread too much). I just thought it was classic that DaDakota's telling posters on a BBS what to tell their doctor.
I'm not for or against the diet, but if you cut down your calories, you will lose weight. Whether it's the Atkins diet or the only carb diet. Doesn't matter. Simple physics.
But there's more than simple physics to it Mr. Clutch. Call it simple metabolics: if you cut your calories, you lower your metabolic rate - then if you raise your calories again, you are more prone to gaining weight. In addition, if you take a large portion of your calories as simple carbs and sugars, your blood sugar will rise, giving you the jones for more carbs. An accurate description of Atkins would be a low-carb, nutrient-rich way of eating. Contrast this with a high-carb, low-fat, low-nutrient way of eating that has been popularized for the last 20 years and tell me which one you think is likely to be better for your body? Btw, good luck Voodoo! I'm still in my first week, but I noticed that my pants are looser today.
So far so good. . .DAY ONE [Why did my job have a FRICKING ICE CREAM SOCIAL today? ] but i survived! Diet intact Feeling only a little tired but nothing major nothing unusual rather [this is actually normal for me] Rocket RIver
I hear that it doesn't take very long to gain most of the weight back after quitting the Atkin's diet. Has something to do with cellular water retention.
fade, If you go back to your old ways you will gain weight back, but I intend to go to a more balanced approach to my diet. Also...cutting out the Dr. Peppers is a very good thing. RM95, I was quoting Dr. Atkins about what to tell your doctor. He says he converted many with that bit of logic. Truthfully, he seems to be the one guy who is using the bodies natural process to get people healthy. DD
TIRED AS HECK going to bed Early.. . no energy I think I need to lok at the vitamins or something Never felt 'full' DAY ONE has been hard. . . .been feeling rundown since about 5 I have not eaten any Carbos yet but man . .this day was hell Rocket River
River, The first 2 days are tough, your body is running out of glucose. After day 2 when you finally start using your stored fat you will feel a burst of energy and it is all downhill after that. Also, you are supposed to eat less then 20 carbs a day...not zero.....you can have some carbs like salad, brocilli, etc..etc... Read the book for a better understanding. Dr. Atkins new diet revolution is a great starting book. Also take vitamins...I take one a day essentials as a supliment while I am on the diet. Keep the faith. DD
No Prob I got SOME carbs breakfast - Omelet and Suasage Lunch - Baked Chicken / Tortilla soup [minus the tortillas]/Some veggie medley Dinner - Salad w/ chicken I need to look for some snacks I need the vitamins as well. [One a Day?] I slept well last night [normally I'm a restless sleeper . . NOT LAST NIGHT] Rocket River
1st week progress report - down to 184 pounds! My pants are looser and I have just one spare notch left on my belt. =) Really hard to believe how the pounds drop off.
Two words - Pork Rinds I wonder what the stats are for people who went on Atkins, lost a bunch of weight, got off Atkins, and gained back all their weight and possibly even more? That is what happened to me. I bet greater than 90% of all people on it have gone through that. It's great for a quick fix to weight loss and if you plan on staying in the "maintenance" phase the rest of your life. I have also lost weight the hard way....1500-2000 calories a day with plenty of weight lifting, biking, and jogging daily. The weight stayed off longer and didn't come back as fast when I stopped. But, eventually it came back once my routine went South for the winter. I think the South Beach Diet may be a bit more reasonable since it allows good carbs as part of the maintenance. I will probably try that one before I go on Atkins again. They both share the same induction phase of basically little to no carbs for a few weeks. The main differences come in the maintenance phase. What seems to be the trend with Atkins is abusing the induction phase. I know people that just continue to go with < 20 grams of carbs a day indefinitely. Their not even taking daily vitamin supplements. I find that approach completely short-sighted and unrealistic to maintain. I don't think it is good for them to be in the induction phase for weeks on end, either.
I just completed my 1st week on my modified Atkins diet (low carbs, just not the 20grams/day for the induction period low). I'm 5' 9.5" and started at 224 (pretty solid base, just too much extra flab and a gut). Weighed myself last night and I'm down to 219 so I think so far so good. I gave myself a pretty good work out 3 times last week. I'm going to try and get myslef to work out at least 3-4 times a week to compesate for any extra carbs, as well as to tone my body. All in all, I'd say it's going pretty good. I'm eating pretty well, just cut out the breads and potatoes (including chips) that used to fill my diet. Right now I'm not missing them as much as I thought I would, although I do have some cravings sometimes. Just need to make sure I ignore the cravings (at least most of the time).
