I thought they had been doing this for a couple years for now, at least on the blackberrys. I wouldn't be surprised if it ends back up on your account. Just last week, ATT and Verizon announced that all feature phones (not just smart phones) will be required to have at least a $10 data plan. This includes the middle of the road texting phones that have querty keyboards. Pretty much only your "dumb phones" or very basic phones will not be required to have a data plan.
i hope those companies start to lose customers. you SHOULD NOT be forced to use functions on your phone if you do not want. wow
No joke. Slightly better deals at Page Plus Cellular ... here's the thread at Slickdeals on this: http://slickdeals.net/forums/showthread.php?t=1593646 T-Mobile did not work near our house (I mean zero bars). I was tempted by the IPhone and thought I would get one for my wife and I, then the quote came out to pushing $200 a month and I just didn't see the need for it. Until I do, I opted to go with Page Plus. I picked up a simple Samsung Smooth for $20 at Wal-Mart or Target and went with the $30/month 1200 minutes/1200 texts setup. You can go unlimited for $40/month. It uses the Verizon network. I've had perfect service. Very reliable.
I work in telecom Of all of the major cell carries, ATT is the worst of the bunch. Luckily they didnt take a month to answer your question because they are that bad. This has literally happened to us taking two months to correct a mistake on a bill they screwed up. They end up transferring you from department to department and you never get anything done still. Sorry to hear that but dont let them do you in. Its tough getting through but you can eventually if you keep at it. Its just a major headache thats all.
Yeah, it looks great to me. I plan on switching from T-Mobile when my contract's up. 45 bucks a month for unlimited talk/text/data on verizons network with no contract? You can't beat that. The phone selection is weak and you have to use their phones, but they have added some new ones including a smart phone.
Solution: -Borrow a friend's basic, non smartphone phone. -Put your SIM in -Go to ATT. Tell them that you got X phone, and ask them to remove the data plan. -They will remove the data plan. Swap your SIM back in.
You can run to Verizon, Sprint or Tmobile....however, each will require a data plan for "smart phones". The excuse is people complain about accident high data use and fees. To stop this, they force a data plan on these phones.
I was recently a victim of ATT's nonsense. I was using a friend's old blackberry without a data plan nor wifi for that matter. I used this phone for a little over a month and then suddenly I received a text message stating that I have been automatically signed up for a blackberry plan. In order for them to remove the plan I had to switch my sim back to my old non smartphone and called the CSR. Anyway, long story short it seems as though they do sweep for smartphones without data plans. I hate ATT, but am committed because of my family plan's contracts.
lol, you should have stayed on the line, man. The account cancellations team are the only guys that could have hooked you up, (probably would have offered you the data plan for free). In situations like these, customer care has the least ability to do anything to resolve your issue, but they're not allowed to tell you that cancellations (or "retentions" here at Sprint) is the department most likely to be able to help you out. Thus, they have to wait for an opening or just cause in order to transfer you over to them.
Same thing happened to me. Call at&t and tell them you want to downgrade your phone. Give them your sim card number and the IMEI to a crappy POS phone like a Motorola EM330. (IMEI#s for that phone are 354650037xxxxxx) Ask the customer service person to remove the data plan since you now have a crappy phone. When you're done, take your sim card and put it back in your BB. Voila.
To the OP, I have a Blackberry Bold and used to have a data plan. I canceled the data plan later and so far, I haven't seen ATT force me to buy a data plan. I probably did cancel before Sept '09 though. Also, my phone was unlocked and I merely brought it to ATT for service. I don't know if that makes a difference.
