I get it. But frankly, the Astros (and their fans) need to stop focusing on today through September and start thinking about the ALDS, and beyond.

That in mind, which do you think is more sustainable?

    1 - Fiers (career 3.87/1.25) maintaining 2.44/1.02?
    2 - Peacock (4.57/1.43) maintaining 2.70/1.37?
    3 - Gray (3.42/1.20) maintaining 3.04/1.20?

He's not going to be pitching in that stadium in Oakland. Not that it matters but he threw 8 shut out ininnings in one game and gave up 3 runs in 5 innings in the second game.

I don't think those numbers matter. What matters is who has the ability to raise their game come playoff time. You know Sale, Price, Porcello, and Kimbrel can do that. Keuchel and McCullers probably likewise. Gray, Fiers, Peacock? I'm dubious on them. Despite Verlander's contract, that's why I favor him. I know Verlander can raise his game under that kind of pressure. He may stink if we get him but I just trust him more.

That's the same reason I think Giles is a problem. I really think his inability to throw strikes in big situations is going to bite us in the ass.

Has that happened this year in the "big situations"??

I don't think we are built to win a series against the Indians, Red Sox, or Dodgers.

    I would rather have as a whole Kluber/Carrasco/Miller/Allen, Sale/Price/Kimbrell/Kelly, or Kershaw/Wood/Jensen/Baez over Keuchel/McCullers/Giles/Devenski.

Unless the player we are getting replaces one of the above four I don't think it matters. That's why Gray or Samardzija is of no interest to me. I would rather keep the young guys until a real stud pitcher becomes available.

If I am going all in right now I trade for Yu Darvish and Zach Britton. Say good bye to Martes. Tucker, Fisher, and Whitley though.

That is an awful lot. Britton's value is interesting. He's been on the DL twice, and his K:BB ratio is awful in his limited time this year. Yu Darvish would be for half a season. I mean, I'd pay a lot for Darvish because he's a real difference maker.

He's been in zero big situations that approximate facing the Red Sox in the ninth inning in Fenway Park. The same reason it was silly for some of you to go ape about Giles's numbers closing for the Phillies.

I'd love him, but the Mariners aren't going to sell.

Porcello isn't an ace (what a fluke Cy Young that he didn't deserve). David Price is 2-8 with a 5.54 ERA in the postseason.

Hold up, so you want to get rid of Martes, Tucker, Fisher, Whitley for a rental? Nah, I'm good.

If we got rid of those four, we better be getting back a Sale like player with three years remaining on the deal...

Sale didn't even fetch that much.

It is an awful lot but if you want Darvish you have to blow away the Rangers with an offer. It has to be good enough to convince them to throw their season away when they are 3 games out in the wild card and convince them to trade to their "rivals" in the division.

Luhnow ain't dealing those players to the Rangers (WITHIN our division). Sorry ain't happening.

Like I've stated before, people will be surprised at what it will take to fetch a guy like Gray. Sending players to OAK doesn't shift the tide for that organization as it would for Texas.

    Legit argument.

DK, LMJ, Gray/Fiers/Peacock, Giles over Price, Sale, Porcello, Kimbrel?

I'm still + Red Sox in the playoffs on that one.

Britton's career performance has been impressive, but I would have concerns about trading for him now given that his post-DL pitching has done little to suggest he is ready to throw at anywhere near his former ability. Righties, in particular, have had a field day with him (BA of .348 against this season) and he's not dominated lefties either.

News came out this week that the White Sox are considering moving Swarzak

    http://m.whitesox.mlb.com/news/arti...ade-todd-frazier-to-yankees/?topicId=27118146

and to me that makes a lot more sense than trading for Britton as Swarzak would be a fairly cheap rental (he's a free agent next year) and, frankly, he's been pitching a lot better than Britton. It matters little to the Astros if Swarzak falls to pieces next year - we only need him to stay solid for 3.5 more months!

Until recently, Mychal Givens of the Orioles had been declared off-limits, but it looks like the Orioles have re-considered:

    https://www.thescore.com/mlb/news/1...oval-for-orioles-to-trade-top-relievers-smith

Givens is another pitcher who probably wouldn't cause serious damage to the farm, and doesn't become a free agent until 2022. He's kept LHB to a BA of .150 and RHB to a BA of .218 against, which is comparable to what Devenski has accomplished this year. He's recorded 4 outs or more in 15 of his 40 appearances, so in that sense he's more than just a Blevins sort of guy who faces 1 or 2 batters and is out of there.

I'm not sure what Swarzak and Givens would cost the Astros, but I would think that Martes, Whitley, KTuck and Fisher would not have to move. That frees those players up for a SP trade if a good one is available (deGrom is the only SP that really interests me at this point).

If the Red Sox are stupid enough to throw Porcello out there (Drew Pomeranz is better). I'd be very tempted to say Hinch should throw LMJ against Sale, Dallas against Price, and Peacock/Gray against whoever Boston goes to 3rd.

For Darvish and Britton it would take all of them.

In the words of the great sage Too Short, we "should be gettin' it, gettin' it while the gettin' is good".
