Archer would be our 8th best starter...sure maybe he comes here and gets energized and improves a lot...but Lance has been our worst starter so far and he has thrown 21 more innings, has a better era, whip and more K's than Archer. Peacock who a lot of people have been down on lately, has an era a full run lower. Archer would be a great get if you were getting him at the kind of price we paid for Cole...but if the return they want is anything like what i've read...they are nuts
How would Archer do as a relief pitcher (or more specifically as a closer)? Or hard to say since starting pitchers are all different and some can/can't adapt from being a starter to the bullpen? If the Astros think he can adapt, maybe they trade for him to go into the bullpen this season but for next season, he goes into the starting rotation, replacing 1 of Keuchel or Morton. Also interested to see if Strom can work his magic and get him to be solid once again.
The whole point of adding Hunter Pence to the trade is we eat at least some of his salary, and we take him off of SF's plate, which they've been trying to do for sometime, and if we offer to do that it should make them more enticed to ship him away. I really want Tony Watson, he's a great lefty reliever who would fit perfectly in our clubhouse, and we saw first hand that he can handle pitching in the postseason. If Milwaukee wins one or both of the two remaining weekend games against the Giants, maybe that opens them more to selling Watson. So for this weekend, Go Brewers!
If Houston adds another reliever then someone from the current bullpen is going to have to go the other way, and the only way that makes any sense is if the guy they add is a significant upgrade. At this point the guy I think they’d send out would be Will Harris. Iglesias is the only guy from Rosenthal’s list who I think would be a meaningful upgrade over Harris.
Barraclough and Yates are probably the best two pitchers on the trade market not just of the relievers available. Archer is controlled and his numbers say he should be much better but his haul will take alot. Astros really dont need another starter clogging up the pen. I trust McHugh, Peacock, etc too make starts if someone has a DL stint. It would make sense for it too ease concerns on Keuchel and Morton entering free agency but I believe with how he’s back to pitching, expressing his desire to remain in Houston and age. The Astros can retain Keuchel if they desire. Same with Morton his career resurgence, desire too play and sign a shorter two to three year contract (before the Astros have to deal with Springer, Correa, etc in free agency) One will walk that’s for certain as the Astros should keep a window open and trust that of Whitley, Armenteros, C Perez, Martes, Bukauskas, etc one will be ready to earn a spot
If they can land Archer, I would do it. He is a solid 3rd pitcher and with the potential of not signing DK and Morton leaving/retiring, he would be a nice addition and he is controlled for several years. For this year, having 6 starters in the playoffs would give the astros an awesome Starter/Closer 1-2 like they did last year. Verlander starting for 6-7....McCullers closing for 2-3 innings Cole starting for 6-7 innnings.... Archer closing for 3 innings. That would be awesome. You can dream.
I’m not sure if he would be an upgrade. Even with his massive HR/FB% this season, Harris has a lower FIP than Iglesias. Iglesias low ERA seems to be driven by a .220 BABIP against and a 90% LOB%.
We don’t need to add a player who isn’t good I would like Watson too, but the one time he was handed a closers role he failed miserably Doesn’t mean he couldn’t help, but we don’t need to waste a roster spot on a bad player to add him We should be past sentimental roster adds, let try to win another title
Would love to land Harper. Fits a clear need and screw it, this is our window. Luhnow can always replenish.
We already have a great closer in Rondon. I trust him as closer. Watson would not be added to be a closer, but as another setup man, and one who's a lefty (our bullpen can still use another LHP). As I stated, the Giants really, really, REALLY want to dump Pence's contract, and have already been aggressively trying to trade him away, per reports, but nobody has bitten. If we say "Trade us Tony Watson and we'll take care of Pence's contract" I think it makes a deal far more likely. I get the feeling that they may not want to trade him, but offering to eat some of Pence's contract could get the deal done. I've explained that like three times now.
This is a real baseball team not a fantasy league. We can’t just stash a crappy player and move on, there are only 25 roster spots And we ain’t the Yankees or dodgers or angels with an endless stream of money to just eat up contracts either, that’s not how this team was built
Okay. But I still support getting Watson, he's a great left handed reliever. And I said he would be used in a setup role. Pence is a FA after this year, his contract is 18.5 million. I'm saying we only eat like a portion of what's left (3 or 4 million isn't too bad). Won't affect us come 2021 when we look to extend our core guys. And as another poster suggested, we'd DFA him.
Just want to throw this out there since so many, including myself, tend to protect our prospects in trade discussions Unless I’m missing something on our current roster including DL guys, the only guys drafted by Luhnow who came up as prospects are Correa Bregman McCullers Davis Tucker The three that are great were #1 overall, #3 and a guy that would have been a high first rounder if not for aignability issues Now I don’t mean this as a knock on Luhnow, wouldn’t trade him for any GM in the business...but fact is for all the talk about how great our prospects are, not many have panned out to this point I still wouldn’t trade Whitley, Tucker or Alvarez, but if any combination of 3 others would get us Harper, reality is we should do it and not think twice
The actual fact is , no owner in the history of the mlb gave his gm 5 straight seasons to be the worst team in baseball. It is unprecedented. He certainly has had more misses than hits given this luxury, trades and draft picks, and 1 ws title is definitely not enough. Trading more now for pressly than Herrera a month ago because he thought Giles could cut it shows you a guy exposed without these fortunate high draft picks. This needs to be pointed out if you want to have a real shot at winning more than 3 WS over the next 5 yrs.
Lol that’s just stupid Luhnow hasn’t been exposed unless by exposed you somehow mean people realize he is as good as any I’m saying people on here, this board, need to realize that outside of the top of the top prospects, most are not likely to make it. That’s just baseball
