If the Nats even want to trade him, I can't see it based on 14 innings. It is due to a very disappointing season overall that 14 innings of Herrera wouldn't have saved. Plain wrong to say after 3 years of watching Giles make the same mistakes, it was unreasonable to be harsh on him. This team will be contending against the Indians, Red Sox and Yankees so you want to have the best talent available out there.
The Yankees have a 4 game lead over the M's (who are falling) and a 5.5 game lead over the A's......... the Astros have a 5 game lead over the M's and a 6.5 game lead over the A's...... So should the Astros also be making moves using that same logic?
Yep, that's what I based the Shin CooCoo trade on. Happy to help out the stros and Luhnow with more propositions via tweet.
Wait when did I say it was unreasonable to be harsh towards Giles? I’ve stated several times I don’t think he should, or will, ever throw another pitch for the Astros again I wouldn’t be against trading for Herrera, but I stand firmly behind what I said. If he was an Astro and gave up runs in 4 of 14 games a majority of posters here would be coming up with trades for his replacement. Most on here think our pen is bad when reality is we have one of the best pens in the game. But yea if we could replace Harris with Herrera I’d be down with that (although in reality we wouldn’t eat Harris contract so Perez would go back down)
Sample size! Was actually curious what the reaction was outside of this thread, not that the internet or talk radio is a really good barometer of anything.
The general reaction outside of this board has been pretty straightforward. To everyone outside #AstrosTwitter, this was the Astros acquiring a Gold Glove catcher for a nobody. Yet, when you look at the reaction from many Astros fans, you'd think we traded Whitley. I'm not saying he won't develop into something, but at this point Sandoval doesn't seem to warrant the heartburn I've seen today.
Houston gets: Bryce Harper + Kelvin Herrera Washington gets: Ken Giles + Sweetener not including our obvious untouchables I don’t think this is insane, but it’s possible you might. I see reasons why both sides might like this deal.
Depends on what the sweetener is. Can't be too much because Giles could totally turn it around, really don't want to hurt the farm.
Always does. As the Ringer article makes clear, there likely wouldn’t be a great market for Harper. Herrera, either, as his performance has lagged, and he too is a rental. Then there’s the Giles mess. This deal would be a roll of the dice for both teams, but an interesting one for sure. No Tucker/Whitley/Alvarez, clearly. No C. Perez, either. Not sure who might interest Washington, but it’s the bones of a deal I hadn’t considered. Just thought it intriguing. Addresses a number of things for both teams.
No to bailing out the Mall Cops. Make them pay for their own mistakes. If we do trade for a LF bat (not sure we need to b/c of Kemp), please not him. Would have preferred trading a blocked IF than Sandoval, but c'est la vie. Pretty partial to Sandoval as we're low on LHP in the minors and he seemed to have potential upside, but I guess I trust Luhnow. If we were renting a catcher, I'd have preferred Ramos. Yes, I totally understand the risks, but he could have been a higher reward, especially with the bat. However, Maldonado is great at throwing out runners, and it looks like he'll be used as a late-game defensive replacement. Still, Stassi's terrible slump is really of concern, and Maldonado is way more of a defensive catcher. I probably wouldn't support bringing back Maldonado long-term given his age (turns 32 next month), but if he works well with our staff, a 1-2 year deal would be fine, if he wants to. Still don't think he solves catching long-term, due to his age. A Realmuto+Maldonado catching duo would be a dream, but I guess I have to be realistic. Tucker Barnhart (if the Reds are willing to sell him) is growing on me as an alternative, he's not as good of a hitter but he's a Gold Glove winner, switch hitter, under more control than Realmuto, and only 27. As others said, this may not be our only move for catching, but we'll see.
