Of course, prospects have value, if they didn’t trades would never be made. However, the guys the Astros gave up to fill catcher and bullpen holes on a World Series-caliber team are guys that wouldn’t make an impact in the majors until 2020 or 2021, at the earliest. So lamenting their loss is silly. In 2020 or 2021, the Astros may not have Cole, Morton and Verlander anymore, and the situation changes. Plus, Lunhow will have 100 plus picks in the next two drafts to replenish the system with guys every bit as good as what he gave up in these two deals. The Astros gave away something of value to get a reliever that fits their spin rate philosophy and has performed well in a setup role in Minnesota. He’s also under club control through next season. Considering the way Devenski and Harris have performed of late, and Giles getting optioned to triple A, yes, Pressly fills an area of need.
First of all, I want to make it clear that I’m not against keeping prospects. It all depends on the caliber of player, team situation and who they are being traded for. For example, to move a Tucker or Whitley would require getting an elite player that has a lot of club control. That said, all three of the guys Lunhow gave up to get Maldonado and Pressly are the kind of player that Lunhow can easily replace in the next draft or two. That’s why I’m not concerned.
No GM thinks every one of their draft picks is going to end up staying in their system. A direct function of the farm is to have enough depth to make trades to fill needs. Trading prospects is a given for every team that’s in contention on a yearly basis. Fans need to grasp this. This team will/should be making trades every year they have a chance to win it all... as there will always be areas to improve.
I am starting to think Devo may be worn down based on recent performance.... He has pitched a lot in the last 18 mos
HERRERA, please Don’t see Iglesias as an upgrade of Rondon as closer. Herrera was a dominant postseason closer for the championship Royals team
I'm hoping the Astros see a ton of +value in his stuff where with some tweaks he can really be a weapon late in games against the potential opponents in October: Pressly v. Indians (link). In 2018, the Indians in 18 PAs are slashing .353/.389/.588 with 5 K's and 1 BB. Pressly v. Yankees (link). 7 PAs, .143/.143/.286 with 5 K's and 0 BB. Pressly v. Red Sox (link). 4 PAs, .667/.750/1.000 with 1 K and 1 BB.
He hasn’t been used as much this year with the goal of preserving him. Most elite bullpen pitchers pitch the load he has. If he can’t pitch beyond the all star break, he’s just not going to be dependable enough long term.
Converts from Rangers to Astros are awesome! I'll take every one we get. Also, we should have just given him #57. RIP DK, but not retired-number worthy. I think having the Darryl Kile award and a DK plaque are good enough. Even more sickening that #44 gets reissued like it's just a regular number. Replace 32 and 40 on the rafters with 17 and 44, please.
Pressly retires the side after the homer. Hopefully we see more of the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th batters Pressly, and not more of the Odor Pressly. I am confident he'll find a rhythm here, has lots of power, and the slider to Beltre was nasty. Praying that more time with Strom gets things straight. Now let's rally back get Pressly the win!
Herrera could have been had cheaper a month ago. Stros kept playing with fire with Giles and had to pay a relatively high price for another middle guy who projected well statistically .. not a 1 inning big stuff shut it down guy. Let's hurry up and get the O healthy because right now it doesnt matter
Herrera has not been very good since the trade, with a WHIP of 1.68. Will Harris is the worst on the Astros staff at 1.23. You'd be b****ing a lot about him if he were doing that for the Astros.
