Pressly, 29, is in the midst of his best season in the Majors to date. The former Rule 5 pick (out of the Red Sox organization in 2012) has seen his velocity trend upward in recent years, and he’s averaging 95.8 mph on his heater with a ridiculous 13.0 K/9 mark against 3.6 BB/9 through 47 2/3 innings this season. His 18 percent swinging-strike rate ranks fifth among qualified relievers. Pressly also has an above-average 47.9 percent ground-ball rate, and though his 3.40 ERA is plenty solid, fielding-independent metrics are even more bullish; FIP pegs Pressly at 2.95, while xFIP has him at 2.86 and his SIERA sits at 2.72
I don't know much about him or if this is a good trade. The 10 and 15 ranked prospect for the astros seems high but what do I know.
His peripherals this season look really good, but he hasn't been dominant. Not sure how much of an upgrade he is. Celestino and Alcala isn't a cheap price to pay. We shall see.
Man sure seems like this is a bigger price than what has been happening Guess we have to trust Luhnow and hope this guy is better than what the raw numbers have been
I would have to think the corresponding move is Perez to AAA. I am a BIG Cionel fan but I think he needs more polishing. Another lefty reliever would still be nice. I support keeping Rondon as closer the rest of the season.
Don't understand trading off Alcala, Celestino, and Sandoval for Maldonado and Pressly. Whatever, I'm not just a couch GM, what do I know.
That's what I thought as well. Maybe this has something to do with him being signed for 2019 as well? Seems most of the other trades have been for rentals which leads to less expensive prospects being traded. I know the Yankees did pay a hefty price for Happ.
Rosenthal said earlier today that “virtually every contender” was in on him. The last-place Rangers are teeing off on pretty much our “best” relief pitchers, and y’all are worried about losing our third or fourth best pitcher in Corpus?
Pressly has a high spin rate on all three of his pitches. 2nd best in baseball on his curve, 5th best on his four seam fastball, and 16th best on his slider. Pretty much a tailor made Astro pitcher.
I'm not worried about the players that were traded. I would think we could have gotten someone better but as I stated earlier, I don't know much about Pressly other than he is having a career season. Him being signed for 2019 has to be why they paid more plus other contenders like the A's and Red Sox were trying to trade for him.
When did these prospects turn into the next Kyle Tucker or Forrest Whitley? Also, Pressly has a 13.0 K per 9 rate this year and is controllable through next year, while Maldonado is Yadier Molina-like in how he can shut down the running game, which neither McCann or Stassi can do.
This article should make everyone feel better. https://www.baseballprospectus.com/...-cant-help-falling-in-love-with-ryan-pressly/
I wonder if his velo and spin rate has changed markedly from last season. He’s having a great season...but so did Joe Smith last year - relievers can be pretty volatile from year to year, even their peripherals.
