ummm...that pretty much covers half of the positions. I think that is a 'hedge' answer because there are more roster moves coming. He didn't want to come outright and say "Gattis is playing LF or 1B or DH" because that would tip off other moves or concern existing players... I sure hope he doesn't become some super platoon player meandering throughout the field...seems like we need to give him some stability. Maybe Gattis at DH and Carter in LF or 1B? Stay tuned..more moves MUST be coming...
Didn't Keith Law hate on Folty most of the time. I am sure there are quotes/chat conversations where Law bad mouthed Folty and said he would never be a starter.
No it doesn't... a player who is covering DH/1B/LF and is an emergency catcher is basically a DH (or a bad defensive player), and you're moving him around to incorporate other bad defensive players into the lineup (Carter, Singleton). Also, he does give away a possible move as they do currently have 3 catchers on the roster, so if Gattis is the 3rd catcher one of them is gone.
He said the same things he always does, he just included a ceiling for a change. He's always thought he'd be a great reliever if he can't find a consistent arm angle and third pitch. He's been far more negative of McCullers & Cosart as to their ability to remain starters.
Poor Corporan. He's the best 4th catcher in baseball. Hard to believe Humberto Quintero was playing regularly not all that long ago.
That makes sense. I think it is McCullers he is not high on but whatever. I'm not sure why he doesn't think we can compete for real in 2016 and 2017. He basically makes it sound like when we are ready to compete Gattis will be too old by then. Seems crazy considering he hasn't played much ball. I guess his swing will decline but if we are playoff competitive in 2016-2018 with Gattis or future return for Gattis then should be a good trade. I know Cespedes is an above average fielder but does anyone think Luhnow might use Carter or Gattis as trade bait to try and land a solid starting pitcher considering what Boston gave up to get Cespedes? I think he has altered his thinking due to the current MLB landscape and will scoop up as much power as possible. You can trade power at a premium and the price should just continue to rise IMO. This is what some people fail to realize when it comes to stat geeks. They don't only analyze numbers, they analyze trends in the game and try to capitalize on them which ends up weakening opponents that can not play the same brand of baseball/basketball/football to keep up. To that end, does anything think Luhnow could already have a framework of a trade for Castro, Carter, or Fowler up his sleeve? It seems like he has to have something brewing to help balance out the roster. I think we will get a better picture of this trade over the next couple of months depending on what the corresponding move is.

Gattis was slightly below average last year, but the problem is his knees and back. He probably shouldn't play catcher that much
So did the Braves win this trade? Going to be hard to get some decent playging time unless Lunhow still trades Fowler in the offseason. Hope this works out for us.
According to Keith Law & Jim Callis they did. I think Jim Callis is spot on in his opinions. He just said on the radio we gave up more for Gattis than the Padres gave up for Justin Upton.
Huh? Gattis should be in the lineup everyday. Won't know if the Braves "won" this trade till you see what each of the traded prospects ends up doing.
From Fangraphs: We now have Gattis projected for .259, 32 HR, 85 RBI, 68 R. Went on to say they admit that is a conservative estimate.
I think the Haul the Braves got has moe to do with the team control Gattis has left versus Upton being in a walk year. If both perform as expected, Gattis might earn $4MM in his first arbitration year in 2016 while Upton would likely command a contract in the $18MM to $22MM per year range as a free agent. The value in that extra cash to spend to round out your roster is reflected in the perceived caliber of prospects sent away. The Braves no doubt did very well in this deal but you can't really compare both trades because they are not like for like. A better comparable would be Josh Donaldson from a team controllable player having increased value in a trade standpoint.

I like the deal, if for nothing else I'm excited to see the Astros play some competitive ball. Not contenders or anything, but they will have some exciting players and finally seem to have some positive momentum. I like it.
The Astros can potentially have 3 guys that hit 30+ HR next season. Considering there were only 8 of those guys total in the AL last season, that's pretty freaking amazing.
