McEwing traded from Royals to Astros

    THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

SURPRISE, Ariz. -- The Kansas City Royals traded utilityman Joe McEwing to the Houston Astros on Thursday for a player to be named.

McEwing, a non-roster invitee to Royals camp, hit .436 with a .600 slugging percentage in 21 spring training games. But that performance failed to win him the utility infielder job.

After the Royals claimed Tony Graffanino off waivers from the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday, manager Buddy Bell told McEwing he would be reassigned to minor league camp.

The 33-year-old McEwing joined the Royals last season after he was released in spring training by the New York Mets. He hit .239 with one home run and six RBIs in 83 games, a drop-off from his career .252 batting average.

McEwing broke into the majors in 1998 with the St. Louis Cardinals and hit .275 in 152 games in 1999.

    splash!

just the move we needed to shore up the offense, i predict a .407 BA, 59 HRs, 140 RBIs from him...AND hes gonna play all 3 outfield spots by HIMSELF

He'll be in AAA and is strictly insurance against an injury (or down the road, a trade) to Burke/Bruntlett. The guy the Astros had for that role - Danny Klassen - is hurt & will be out for awhile.

We also got Cody Ransom SS from the Mariners. Probably more AAA fodder.

A very shrew acquization by Pup.

Joe Mac is a savvy, scrappy and impactful baseball player whose numbers never wow anyone but he delievers when it matters. He is a great lockeroom guy as well. He would love playing for Garner and vice versa.

    Yep.

Fegwu - one of the things repeated by minor leaguers when first exposed to big leagues (in big league ST, or at minicamp, Nolan's clinic, etc...) is how much they learn just from talking to & watching the older guys - how they go about their routines, mental preparation, etc.... You're right on about McEwing's rep, and in addition to insurance at the big league level, he should be able to provide some mentorship of some sort to the kids in RR.

Like the moves. They will add depth to team in cases for injuries. McEwing had a nice spring a .436 avg this spring a .500 OBP with 1 HR in 39 AB's. Ransom is a very slick fielder but can't hit. He will help if Everett gets injured.

    Shrew - noun -
    1. Any of various small, chiefly insectivorous mammals of the family Soricidae, resembling a mouse but having a long pointed snout and small eyes and ears. Also called shrewmouse.
    2. A woman with a violent, scolding, or nagging temperament; a scold.

    A shrew acquization indeed... :D

Giants are trying to build the oldest team in MLB history, they couldn't afford to pass up a chance to overpay for Vizcaino.
