Sounds good except for two things... A. How much do you eat of Lee's contract to the point that another team would even want him? He's still owed $38 million between 2011 and 2012. B. What about giving our younger OF prospects a chance to play in a lost season? If we trade Pence, that's up to 3 spots you can fill with the likes of Bogusevic, Gaston, etc... Is it worth it for sentimental value? I can see both arguments. My thought is that Puma should go to a contender next season as well and ultimately come to Houston at the very end of his career in a minimal role for minimal dollars. I want the same thing for Roy. Nothing he's done has changed my opinion of him. Bring him in as 3rd or 4th SP for one final season at the end of his career. I don't think it will be hard to convince him to do it.
If the Astros didn't pay $11 million, it would make more sense. The Phills are getting Oswalt through 2011 for just $12.5 million.
So rather you are saying all the people who put the lists together at MLB.com and Baseball America are?
They wanted GOSE bad during the Halladay trade but Philly rejected and they feel Adam Lind is ready to take over at 1st so Wallace was essentially blocked.
I would certainly trust the BJ's who have watched him in their system over writers at MLB.com and Baseball America. Journalists are usually way off on draft projections.
Yes, Wallace is blocked, but they didn't have to dump him either. Either they are really high on Gose or they are low on Wallace for some reason.
We don't have a choice. Carlos Lee is awful and has a negative WAR. There is no reason for teams to pay him a cent above whatever average player they can plug in there.
Guess you a) aren't familiar with Blue Jay's management, and b) aren't aware that 'journalists' like Keith Law that love Wallace were the Blue Jay's management before the current Blue Jay's management.
What did you want them to do? The guy is MLB ready but nowhere to play him? If he could bring you a guy that was valued highly within the organization for someone who won't see the field then you do it
$25 million. 6.5/year makes him a good deal for a team in need of a DH. i'm pretty torn on puma, but it sure sounds like he's planning on coming back next year, no? as much as my brain tells me the franchise is screwed for a while, i always like to go into the season deluding myself into thinking we have a shot. hope springs eternal, and whatnot. and berkman is better than any of the players you just mentioned (obviously), so i wouldn't have a problem having him start the season here and see what develops. like you said though, trade pence tomorrow and that problem is solved too...puma, bourn, and the youngsters in the OF.
Keith Law hasn't been with the Blue Jays since 2006. Wallace joined the Blue Jays in 2009. I don't see the contradiction. The BJ's might be incompetent, but I would still trust their management over journalists.
I read about them moving Lind to 1st but if Wallace was as good as some people still believe he is, you would find room to play both of them, no? I don't know much about the rest of the Blue Jays prospects and how they plan on putting together their lineup in the future but trading Wallace for Gose seems to clearly tell me that they think that Gose is going to be a better player than Wallace. I don't buy the argument that it's just harder to find a good CFer, esp. since Gose still has bust potential. I think they were looking to move Wallace for other reasons in addition to liking Gose. Mainly, that they don't think Wallace is going to be anything special as a MLB 1B. If he was able to stay at 3B, it may have been a different story for Wallace, in general.
I'm just questioning why they would trade such a highly rated prospect for one that much lower. It just makes me curious, that's all. This is also the 3rd time Wallace has been traded. I'm not saying he sucks, just questioning why.
I agree they think Gose will be better then Wallace but that is just the Jay's opinion. Law, Badler and even Callis who like I mentioned earlier is VERY tough on prospects think Wallace is the better prospect.
Yea, I know, I just think it was more about their philosophy and structure then Wallace himself. I will say while Wallace has moved a few times that also means teams want him.
If they wanted to play Wallace, there was room for him. Overbay has never been anything special and Lind could be used in a number of other roles. They have a DH option, too. If Wallace is as good as his last ranking in the prospects, are you telling me they had no room for a "hitting machine" like him at 1B or as a DH? They dump him for a guy with bust potential like Gose despite the high ceiling? Shouldn't there be a better deal than that?
I don't think he is a can't miss prospect, dont get me wrong, but I just don't think its about who's better.
I hear you but those guys see Wallace play every once in a while then read stuff that other people wrote about him. The Jays had him in their system with people watching him every day. If the Jays were as high on Wallace as his prospect ranking would lead you to think they should be, they would hold onto him and make him either their 1B or DH of the future instead of risk losing him for a guy with so many unknowns in Gose.
Yea, I think I stated that wrongly in the previous post. I do believe that they have better alternatives at 1B and DH than they do in the OF based on what I've read. Having said that, if Wallace was as good as some people think he is and had as much value to other GMs around the leauge, they would've likely gotten a better and more sure fire prospect than Gose in return. There are some that are high on Gose but there is little doubt that despite his high ceiling, he still has an uncomfortably low floor given his raw attributes in some areas. Doesn't that seem like a pretty big risk and a low return for a hitting-machine like Wallace? Or is Wallace not actually likely to be a hitting-machine compared to other 1B and DHs?
Too funny reading all of you internet GMs' whining. We're finally ADMITTING to rebuilding. This is a GOOD thing. Plus, do any of you really know anything about the prospects besides what you read on that twitter crap? Let it runs its course. You can't judge the moves the DAY they're made. Roy is getting older and it's not a sellers market. Berkman had little trade value due to age and consecutive bad seasons. I love those two, but I care about the organization as a whole a lot more than two players. I'll reserve judgement until the prospects start playing for our organization. I'm actually more excited watching these young guys than the same old tired crap. BTW- I would have LOL'd if we were to have made a trade for a 23 round pick for whatever from a junior college who nobody scouted. Oh, wait! That was Oswalt!!! You're all internet GM's for a reason. Deal.
