Joelsherman1 Melancon was reliever #Yankees had great hope for, who cannot translate to MLB and struggled some this year at Triple-A. Joelsherman1 Paredes is 21, SH with speed, plays 2b, ss, 3b
Conversely, why wouldn't you, especially when many of them get bursts of attention every June when the amateur draft rolls around? I meant it as a serious question. I'm not talking about taking the time to drive to CC or RR to watch a game, I'm simply talking about checking in on the player development online through team websites, news aggregators, and blogs. It takes very little time and yet it's a way to connect the average fan to the development of the potential stars (or utility players) of the future. For as long as I can remember there has always been at least one or two prospects who I've been curious enough about to track regularly. In the past it was guys like Jason Lane, Chris Burke, Luke Scott, Jason Hirsh, Troy Patton, and Morgan Ensberg. Recently it's been guys like Koby Clemens, JD Martinez, Jio Mier, Jason Castro, Chia Jen Lo, Dan Meszaros, Ross Seaton, Jay Austin, and the top picks in this year's draft.
http://brianmctaggart.mlblogs.com/archives/2010/07/berkman-reflects-on-career-in-houston.html pretty touching stuff. don't know why i'm surprised to hear that much love coming from him. makes me more sad to see him go than i expected to be. happy trails, lance. maybe we'll see you back here on the cheap.
I don't think this is true at all. You must've missed it when his former Philly colleagues were praising his work in building the foundation that led to a World Series championship in the City of Brotherly Love. The people who regard him as one of the "worst GMs in baseball" are not themselves IN BASEBALL. Remember, Keith Law got fired from his scouting job. Ed Wade parlayed his scouting job with the Padres into a GM job with Houston. Oh, btw, you wanna know who Wade scouted that one year he was with San Diego? Matt Latos.
He makes bad signings, not just in who he signs but in the terms of the contracts. Kaz Matsui, Brian Moehler, David Bell, Pat Burrell, Pedro Feliz, Brandon Lyon, Jose Mesa. He has four signature trades now. He's traded Scott Rolen, Curt Schilling, Brad Lidge, and Roy Oswalt. In return he's received the following players... Omar Daal, Nelson Figueroa, Travis Lee, Vicente Padilla, Placido Palanco, Bud Smith, Mike Timlin, Michael Bourn, Geoff Geary, Mike Costanzo, JA Happ, Brett Wallace, and Jonathan Villar. He better draft like God with transactions like those.
I do follow our minor leaguers but most people don't and I wouldn't blame them. Most of the guys you mention aren't going to be a hill of beans in the majors. It's the nature of it.
Why isn't the Billy Wagner trade (in which he 'fleeced' Hunsicker) one of his signature trades? Is it because it was a successful one and would how Wade in a more positive light?
Yup. Puts the "Berkman can play OF for them" to rest. Not saying people hear said it, but I've heard it! Also wanted to ask, any confirmation on how much they're paying in Berkman deal? Heard both 3(Olney) and 4 million(Heyman). Guess we'll find out later.
I'm all for trading Berkman to a contender. Hell if he has a chance in hell of getting a ring with the Astros. Same with Oz. Now I have a reason to watch a couple more teams...cause they have my long time favorite players on them. I'm especially gonna be watching Berkman DH for the Yanks. Oz...more follow him on the stats sheet. This is pretty wild trading these guys both in the same week. Get rid of Lee next.
The fact that we've heard nothing about Lee being open to a trade shows how little he cares about winning. In some cases, you could argue loyalty. This isn't one of them. He's just content in his situation. Better yet, fat and happy.
Well I don't have a pdf of Wade's resume. Two things on that trade though. Drayton forced Hun to trade Wagner both as a salary dump and because Wagner wouldn't shut up so who knows what all went into that. Second of all, Buccholz was the best prospect in the Astros system when he came over so he may not have worked out but he was a well rated prospect when he was acquired.
