Fair enough. My point is pretty straight forward. Everyone should back away from the ledge and stop assuming the Astros got nothing while giving the Yankees money. We don't even know what the Astros got in return because the trade is not official and has not been confirmed by reliable sources. Chill out, kids.
everybody is chilled out besides you there, buddy. your points are more effective and credible when written like that one.
The only explanation I can come up with is that the dynamics of the market changed. Different team, different player, different demands to work around. Haren was only in the second year of his contract and makes about 5 million less than Oswalt now. They got him for longer than the Phillies have Roy and for less per year (although more over the life of the contract). Maybe that's more enticing to teams looking to bolster their lineup...who wants to trade prospects away for a player who's gonna turn around and leave a short while later? And then the Phillies also had budget issues which acquiring Oswalt would only exacerbate. Not sure about the Angels and Padres though, but it does make a little sense that the Astros would have to provide some budget relief to the Phillies for taking on the contract, regardless of whether or not Roy is a bargain at that price. Plus the Dodgers and Cardinals dropped out (and that the Astros weren't high on the Cardinals prospects), leaving basically Philly. And then you combine Roy O's no trade clause and his initial demand for the club to pick up his option (which he later dropped), perhaps the Astros squeezed what they could.
Well i have so say (given that I have been critical of W/D lately, they finally have done the needed thing (i.e. get prospects for older vets). I really cant judge what we got in return, but at least the strategy is sound. At least W/D have fessed up and put away their tired assurances to the ticket holders. Now I can start tuning into the minors and see who shows up to break into the majors. At least their is a place to look for hope now. ...and so far, Happ is having a better night than Oswalt Bless you Roy.
Are they? This thread is full of chicken little panic over the Berkman deal. None of you prejudging this move have learned a lesson from yesterday's turn of events.
No way dude you are definitely coming off as a prick. About to add to the ignore list until that and you would have been the first one.
Serious question: why would just now start to pay attention to the minor leaguers because of what's happened over the last 24 hours ? There are some names in AA ball and below that should excite Astros fans enough to pay rudimentary attention to their development. (i.e. Lyles, Martinez, Clemens, Hinze, Altuve, Heath, Chris Wallace, Kvasnicka, Folty, Arguello, Austin, Cartwright, etc etc etc)
Because they are sports fans and trades are one of the most exiting and emotional parts of the game? Because its a sports forum? You CANT be confused by this.
Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight. I see how it is. It's entirely acceptable for many here to continually bash Ed Wade as a stupid, incompetent fool in the face of overwhelming evidence to the contrary, and do it with not-so-funny photoshops, but if anyone dares call out this kind of idiotic bashing for what it is, they're a prick. Got it.
Hmm. I'm a sports fan. I'm on sports forums. I don't need a trade to suddenly find a reason to follow the Astros minor leaguers.
When you have established major league players that you've followed for their entire careers on a team that's been in the playoff hunt for the better part of 15 years, why would you spend time following a host of 19 year olds in A ball that play in the worst farm system in baseball?
Yep. What the hell did you expect we just traded away 2 of the franchises best players, the team is in the dumps and hope is low. So you choose to berate people on a soap box it sucked. Thats just me though - most posters liked it I think so kuddos.
People in baseball, professionals, regard Ed Wade as one of the worst GM's in baseball. What overwhelming evidence do you present to the contrary? Please enlighten us all.
You make some fair points but I have to say that v3.0's work was definitely funny, regardless of where you stand on Wade. Source: http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showpost.php?p=5484303&postcount=484
Agreed. I couldn't tell you **** about the Rio Grande Vipers other than they won the championship. There's just no need for me to follow them. I know the Astros top prospects, but it's silly for someone to expect a fan to know an organization's prospects from top to bottom. A third of the guys Mailman listed in his prospect post, I have no idea who they are -- and I consider myself a decently knowledgable Astros fan.
Joelsherman1 Heard #Yankees are sending T-A reliever Mark Melancon and Low-A infielder Jimmy Paredes to #Astros for Berkman
During his tenure, the Phillies drafted future All-Stars such as Chase Utley, Randy Wolf and Cole Hamels and selected Shane Victorino in the Rule 5 Draft. Additionally, All-Stars Ryan Howard and Jimmy Rollins, back-to-back NL MVP's in 2006 and 2007, were drafted and developed while Ed was the Phillies GM. Please, enlighten us all why he's so bad? Outside of Philadelphia running their own out of town, exactly why is this guy a bad GM?
I'd take that. Melancon isn't really a prospect but Berkman isn't exactly a hot commodity these days.
That's decent, I suppose. Melancon appears to be a legitimate prospect, rated higher than McCallister here: http://www.scoutingbook.com/prospects/NYY If nothing else, maybe having a stable of young relievers (Lindstrom and possibly Melancon) will prevent Ed from reaching for any more Brandon Lyon types.
