Wouldn't be too happy about Berkman being traded if it is just a salary dumping move, and no good prospects in return.
Because of these two deals you mean? If so, we may have been able to do slightly better at best on the Oswalt deal but that wouldn't make that much of a difference. Not sure what else we could do with Berkman given all the facts.
Isn't that essentially what rebuilding is?! Better to start from scratch than continue the band aid approach of the past five years.
thescorer Brett Wallace, likely replacement for Berkman, not in the lineup for Class AAA Round Rock tonight
I think we should trade Brett Myers as well. His value is very high at the moment, and the Astros need as many prospects as they can get. This could be a good, young team by 2012.
Rumor was earlier that if the Sox flipped Jackson for Dunn they would come after Myers, now that is where you could get a NICE prospect.
because of how they are handling the entire deadline. having a firesale to save the owner money rather than add significant pieces who have realistic chances at becoming good mlb players to rebuild the team. does it appear to anybody that they are doing whatever it takes to bring back the best possible pieces using the trade-able assets that they have. yes, i understand that's his right as the owner. just a bit disheartening and depressing, that's all.
People b**** about the Astros not admitting it's time to rebuildi, but when the Astros basically admit as much by trading two franchise icons within 24 hours, people b**** about the Astros rebuilding. b**** b**** b**** b**** b****. If it bothers you this much, why are you even a fan?
OMFG. Some of you just whine to whine. You know ZERO about who the Astros have received in exchange for Berkman, but you've got your spear sharpened and aimed at MMPUS.
I hear you, cardpire. I just feel that the way they draft and develop players is the real key to this rebuild and should always be at the core of team building. They got away from that for awhile and over the past few years seem to be moving back in that direction. Doing well in trades of guys like Roy and Lance is also a component of the rebuilding process so if they were to continually do bad in that area over time, I would get frustrated, too.
if it didn't, i wouldn't be. people like you are so cliched and annoying. jump on anybody who doesn't agree with every move a team makes. such a silly, tired act.
Plus, who's to say the Astros didn't work hard trying to get the best pieces back possible. Multiple stories indicated they were pressing hard for Singleton, but the Phillies balked at the idea. So what do you do, go back home with your tail between your legs or find a plan B? I think expectations have been way too high on the quality of prospects this team would be able to get.
I think we are all need to take a deep breath and chill out for a bit, we don't even know if these are the actually names being moved. I mean how many times did the prospect change in the Philly trade? The Yanks are done acquiring players so who knows maybe we are surprised at who we pick up or we don't send ANY cash to the Yanks.
The reason the expectations are high on the quality of prospects is because of the money the Astros sent in both deals. Roy Oswalt, Jake Peavy, and Dan Haren are all probably on the same level. Compare the packages the Padres got for Peavy, Diamondbacks got for Haren, and what the Astros got for Oswalt. The Padres and Diamondbacks didn’t send any money to the other team and still got the same caliber of package the Astros got. Makes little sense.
right, but the other 29 teams are doing that too. we are doing it at the same pace as the rest of the league...it isn't an advantage that we have over them, per se. throw in the fact that we are in the bottom few farm systems in all of baseball, and reality begins to set in on how huge of an uphill climb this team likely has. it just feels like they are in the process of cashing in what few chips they have, and getting back little to stimulate the rebuilding process in return.
