Pence is getting the night off because Mills wants JMike to get a start. Pence is NOT being traded. less than 10 seconds ago via web

eh, that's a tough sell if you ask me.

It's just sad. I don't understand why Brad Mills is sitting Pence for Micheals. And if you are going sit Pence, at least put Jason Bourgeois in for him.

I don't get it. If we needed salary relief, then why did we pay the Phills $11 million? Lance is owed $7 million so that offsets most of it.

Maybe it helps to look at it as one big trade.

We give up: Roy, Lance, and $4 million
    We get: Happ, Wallace, Villar.

    Worth it?

Lance is just on the downside of his career. While he can definitely still be useful to a team in contention, he is no longer worthy of a team giving up a top prospect. Especially if the team knows he will only be there for two months or so.

Yes, he is on the downside of his career, but he has a cheap buyout next year, so he won't cost much. He is still useful like you said.

I don't expect a top prospect, but at least something better than a non-prospect.

Im bracing myself for the blind defenders actually. I expect people to b**** because this is a sports message board with passionate (if naive) fans. Also the Astros have been bad the last couple so..

Berkman for cap relief hurts if that is the case. :( Watch his career get rejuvenated and he go Micky Mantle for 2 more season or so with the excitement of NY.

If Berkman wants to play baseball for 3 more years, I'm sure he could remain one of the best hitters in baseball. .300 avg .400 obp 30 hr IF his HEART is in it, which this year it's not. This season has been a total disaster from the beginning. With the excitement of playing ONLY 2 months for the Yankees, he might end up winning the World Series for them.

That's just embarrassingly bad for a Friday night game with a new SP. Wonder what Happ is thinking..."Holy sh**. This team SUCKS!"

It would not be surprising for the Astros to trade Berkman and then re-sign him next season.

Peter Gammonds just said on MLB Network that Lance to Yankees is a done deal.

Cannot be announced until tomorrow for some reason I did not fully understand......something about having to send his (no-trade) approval to the league office.

I guess essentially we traded Oswalt and Berkman for a 4 or 5 caliber pitcher and two prospects and cap relief. It would've been nice to get one prospect from Berkman, but oh well.

If Berkman goes on to have success for a few more season though, good for him. It really doesn't matter to this team because his talent would be wasted anyway.

Damnit! I love Puma, but hate the Yanks. What do I do now?

I guess I'll root for them to win in situations where Lance will be the reason they win. Other than that I still hope they get trounced.

@BloggingBombers: Berkman deal isn't done yet, as Yankees & Astros are still working out who will pay what of the $7M he's owed. But it's close, source said.

    10-5 Rights (no-trade)
If a player has been on an active major league roster for ten full seasons and on one team for the last five, he may not be traded to another team without his consent. Manny Ramirez was an example. He had been on a major league roster since 1995 without interruption, and had been playing with the Red Sox since the begining of the 2001 season. While his contract lacked a no-trade clause, Ramirez had no-trade protection because of his 10-5 status.

Once Lance waiving the rights is submitted to the League office (this morning), there is a 24 hour period where he can take back the submission. Tomorrow morning, the 24 hours expires... deal will be announced tomorrow afternoon.

Uhhhh...what's to work out from the Astros perspective? If we're getting to not-top prospects, why would the Astros pay anything? Oh right...because they just did it yesterday.
