Here's the news: http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/wire?section=mlb&id=1703428 HOUSTON - The Houston Astros on Thursday agreed to a minor league contract with infielder John Valentin, who has not played since the 2002 season. Financial terms were not released, but Valentin received an invitation to spring training. The 36-year-old Valentin was with the New York Mets in 2002 and batted .240 with three home runs and 30 RBIs in 114 games. He began his career as a shortstop, but has played second and third base as well the last few seasons. In 1,105 games with Boston and the Mets, Valentin has a .279 batting average with 124 homers and 558 RBIs. He played collegiately at Seton Hall with Astros outfielder Craig Biggio. --------------------------------------- Hopefully he can regain his 1995-1999 years w/ us if he can get on w/ the team.
If he pans out then it will be a really good bench acquisition. If not, then no real loss. It is a minor league contract.
