Diaz is not Buster Posey or Johnny Bench...keep him while you can for as long as he's a catcher, and if you think he can last and not be a 1B/DH then sign him longer. If not, let him go or turn him into a 1B/DH if he hits that well.
Diaz is not Posey or Bench. Lol. Who tf said he was? He is the best catcher we have (offense and defense) and that’s where he is most valuable. Also, he sucks at 1B.
Leaving Disney world. Kids are sad. Except for my 12 yr old daughter, she is ready! I will only have to work 2000 hours of OT now to pay for this
Diaz is a hitter. He has great bat to ball skills and power. If for any reason he can not stay at catcher, he has a place in MLB because of his bat. He also happens to currently be at a point in his career where he is a proven commodity, is probably willing to accept an extension, and will be very affordable in comparison to other contracts we have seen. At his age, and service time Crane and Brown should be willing to go 7 years which would buy out 3 FA years and it would be shocking if it cost $100M. Most likely less than $90M. This is exactly the type of Deals Brown talked about doing when he was hired.
Wut? The deke'd intentional drop of the popup turned into a double play is totally Bagwellian Play #1 may be the best one though. I'm looking forward to more of this.
Oh I get it. I wish I could find the replay of Bagwell making that same play, except he tagged 2 runners out on a popped-up bunt, both at 1B I remember watching it wondering "WTF just happened?" Then Dierker explained it, and then you knew Bagwell knew exactly what he was doing.
Everything is in balance. I don't know about 6-7 or 8 years but the Crane has instructed Click and now Brown to make offers to player already under contract. The only player that has been a key pieces that they have failed to make an offer to (that I am aware of) is Framber Valdez and George Springer. George Springer liked to blame the Astros for not making him an offer - but he had already made it clear he intended to cash in. As for Valdez, there were concerns at the time about how he would handle the pressure of an extension. The Astros wanted no part of Dallas K in an extension. The Astros made offers to Bregman - Altuve - Grossman - Singleton - Tucker - Meyers - McCormick - Javier - Abreu - Alvarez. Most of the players did not take the extensions - some did and panned out (Bregman) - others have not (McCullers) and some were small and didn't matter (Singleton). Sometimes a team will get a group of guys in a particular window to take extensions.... the Indians 20 years ago, the White Sox 10 years ago and the Braves 5 or so years ago......... but if you notice, that doesn't continue to happen to most teams - it is a circumstantial issue. Sometimes players that come from relative poverty will take the money (Albers, Alvarez) and sometimes guys do it with the idea that they can still hit free agency and make money (Bregman).
I think the Astros also offered Matt Dominguez an extension that he rejected. I actually think Grossman’s career would have gone much better had he signed an extension that gave the Astros more incentive to develop/play him.
Ozzie Albies You are correct - the Astros did offer Dominguez an extension and he should have taken it - Preston Tucker also .... Grossman believed he was going to be a 300 hitter.... it didn't happen. It is easy for Boras to tell these guys to wait it out, but the utility of $20,000,000 isn't that much different than $50,000,000.... I think of all the guys that come through baseball and are out before they hit free agency and really end up with no real money post playing days. If I were the agent for Diaz, I would be talking to the Astros about buying out all of his team-controlled years and some post arbitration seasons as well. Once you have 10-20 million dollars, I can understand being more inclined in taking a risk - but not when you are under team control.
I love the random MVP and WS bonuses. You make $20,000,000, but hey, if you're the single best player in the league, we'll up that to $20,200,000. Oh, and if you win us a WS and are the best player in that series, here's another $100,000.
