he's also been a very good reliever for the majority of his career

I hear Nolans been working on his choke holds.

i bet if Nolan had a sub 3 ERA last year, you wouldn't think it was a big deal if they signed him

    Very good is an exaggeration.

He's been good in the past, but also:

    2010: 7.32 ERA
2011: 5.05 ERA away from PETCO
    2012: 5.20 ERA

Usually it is a bad idea to pay based on career performances in their 30s. Qualls isn't a big deal, so I'm not sweating the contract. I am concerned that this isn't really solidifying our bullpen.

hadn't realized the away from PETCO stat, since his 2011 overall was 3.51

It's a little unfair though--his K/BB rate was much higher at home, which really shouldn't be the case. BAbip was much lower at home--maybe there's some adjustment there, but it shouldn't be a 20% difference.

I'd venture to say his 2011 season was solid. 2010 and 2012 he had issues. And 2004-2009 + 2013 he was very good. On a short term deal, I'll take those odds

Which is why he only got 6 million

That, and relief pitchers don't make a ton, unless they close.

    Not that I know of.

Peter Moylan, who we signed to a minor league deal is. Personally, I hope Moylan makes it.

Good grab for the money, I've always liked Qualls.
