Buchholz & Willy for Garland makes a ton of sense for both teams. Sox have wanted better defense in CF since about 5 minutes after they traded Aaron Rowand. Podsednik is horrible in center (which is why he hasn't played there since leaving Milwaukee) and strictly adequate in LF. Brian Anderson struggled greatly on offense as a rook last year, and wasn't nearly as good on defense as they hoped. They also want young pitching to replace their soon-to-be FA expensive starters. Adding Hirsh to the mix is insane, if that's really what the Sox are asking for. Whoever it was that said "Buchholz is crap" is a straight up fool. Inconsistency out of a young starter? Whoda thunk it? If his shoulder's right, he's going to be a good one. So will Hirsh Anyone catch Berkman on 610 this morning? Hilarious...got me a shiny new sig.
Kenny Williams is on something if he thinks Jon Garland is worth 2 "Major Players". He may have another starter worth that but it ain't Garland. I like Garland but not at the price the Sox apparently expect. edit: I didn't hear him Buck but I like the sig!
Buchholz had a bad ERA thanks to a few horrific starts, but his WHIP, K/9 and H/9 are all better than Garland's career norms. This move would not make sense, in my opinion, for the Astros. Improving the rotation is fine, but aside from one aberration in 2004, Garland's never been anything better than a solid #4 throughout his career.
this is the part where i sheepishly raise my hand to say, "that was me." but i didn't say he was trash. just that i heard footer say the other day on the radio that they astros have no plans for him to be in the starting rotation this year.
I am just throwing it out there nothing has played itself out, but Andy seems like a great guy and I do not belive he just gonna use the Yanks for contract leverage and I do belive he is serious about playing there and the only reason I can think of Andy wanting to up-root his family would be the fact that he thinks the Yanks have stronger leadership at the top ie. Stienbrener, Torre and Cashman over Uncle Drayton, Fat ass and town idiot
Or maybe because he spent most of his baseball career there and has a great relationship with some of the players and the manager.
Nah, wasn't you. No matter. I'd be very surprised if the Stros had definitively ruled any of the young guys in or out of the rotation 3 months before Spring Training. Hell, I've heard Gar mention Wandy several times as a "leading candidate". What's true in November doesn't exactly hold true in April, though.
Unless you sleep in the same bed as Pettitte, you have no idea who he is when he takes off the Astros uniform and goes home. He's a good pitcher who knows that his current team is in desperate need of pitching. After seeing how Roger Clemens earned 12 mil for half a season, wouldn't Pettitte also want to dip his finger into the money pool as well?
unfortunately a hole for 1/2 a season is 10 - 15 loses. Andy comes back home anyway. No need to worry there.
Only reason Clemens got that is because Drayton knows he will sell out almost every game he pitches and make his money back. Pettite doesn't sell out games. There is a big difference in paying Clemens that kind of money and Andy that kind of money....Draytons return is not as great.
Can we changed the title of this thread to, "Bullsh!t 'scoop' concerning Garland/Astros from Houston Chronicle falls through" What a piece of crap rag.
So what is the "official" latest on this supposed trade? My friend from Houston called about an hour ago and said it was a done deal, Garland for Willy and Hirsch.
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2006/writers/jon_heyman/12/07/thursday.scoop/1.html The White Sox traded Freddy Garcia to the Phillies on Wednesday and nearly sent Jon Garland to the Astros. The trade hit a snag and fell through, however, when young right-hander Taylor Buchholz failed a physical. Chicago also stood to receive speedy center fielder Willy Taveras and right-hander Jason Hirsh in the deal.
only that dumbass JDJO that 'writes' for the Comical has said that. The Sox GM has denied there's a deal in place, and the Astros haven't commented since Tal Smith said (to JDJO) he was waiting until an announcement.
