This is how I heard the trade as it was that it was a two-for-one swap. Drayton wouldn't not (damn double negative) sign Pettitte if he came to him after the trade was made and said he wanted to be in Houston. It would give us a formidable rotation with a young guy as the fifth starter. If Clemens decided to come back...great, if not oh well. As it is, all this posturing by Pettitte leaves a really sour taste on the whole situation. All his talk about wanting to be home and with his family all seems like a load of bull. In the end I think he'll be here in Houston, but if he ends up in New York, I really won't be suprised cause it seems like money has been the most important factor since the market became insane.
http://chicagosports.chicagotribune...rs,1,7922034.htmlstory?coll=cs-home-headlines While the Jon Garland-to-Astros trade could be revived, there was relief on both sides when it fell through Thursday morning. The White Sox seemed pleased for the time to reassess their options, and the Astros were hopeful the threat of Garland filling his spot would cause free agent Andy Pettitte to tell his agents to stop flirting with the Yankees and get him a new deal in Houston. The Astros were not going to pull their offer to Pettitte off the table if they added Garland, but the financial implications from doing both could have ruled out Roger Clemens and forced GM Tim Purpura to dump players such as Brad Lidge and Morgan Ensberg. …
i dont see ANYTHING that would prevernt drayton from giving clemens a deal if he wanted to pitch...ANYTHING thats being said, if we ended up with rocket/AP/Roy/Woody?garland as our rotation...id part with lidge and mo.....lamb can play 3B and wheels/qualls can close
they closed last yr and we managed didnt we? oh...and news flash....only one can close...the other can pitch the 7th and 8th
Agreed...Although, I'm not sold on Clemens...I'd like him back, but for the money, c'mon...would like Andy back, but its all about the economics...I still think we need another consistent bat, someone that is clutch and can knock in RISP...
News flash. Wheeler only closed occasionally last year, and didn't do that much a better job than Lidge. (Wheels: 9 saves, 3 blown saves. Lidge: 32 saves, 6 blown saves.) This is a better team with Qualls, Wheels, and Lidge going 7,8,9 than what you propose.
what i am proposing is that if its clemens or one of those 3 that we have on our team, due to salary restraints, ill take clemens every day of the week
"Dammit, General! This is a mistake! Any damn way you cut it! Don't condemn this city!" "By the way, have you seen this monkey? I'll trade you Brad Ausmus for it!" Yes, I just felt like posting something with Dustin Hoffman from "Outbreak".
That's just faulty analysis. Wheeler was a setup guy most of the year. You can't get saves in that role, but you can get blown saves. In fact, Wheeler got the hold in 24 games, for a total of 24+9 = 33 "save or hold" opportunities, of which he blew only 3, and only 1 of those after he'd assumed the closer role late in the season. He also had an ERA less than half of what Lidge's was. His stuff might not be as dynamic, but the man is extremely consistant - the most important quality a closer can have. There's your news flash.
