Hah. He could have been right -at the time-, but it's funny to see Heyman's quote of "Braves are the last team in on Hunter", only to see "As many as eight clubs on Pence", right above it. Good times.
classic. the astros are in a nice position at this point to deal. i hope they take advantage of it, as much as i hate to see hunter go.
Buster_ESPN Buster Olney The Phillies' hope that Houston is willing to move Hunter Pence seems to be holding up PHI's conversations with SD about Adams/Ludwick. jaysonst Jayson Stark Interest in Pence exploding since Beltran trade (Phillies, Braves, Reds, Red Sox). I don't buy/understand the whole waiting for the offseason to trade Pence. If Crane is in on all personnel moves why would you wait to deal him? The period right before the trade deadline is a time where teams begin to get desperate for help and enter bidding wars as they race against the clock and each other to make a move.
They are also all elite teams with a mixed bag of prospects that aren't neccesarily "sure" things. In the off-season, you not only have the elite/contenders... but also the up and coming teams that are "one piece away" that will look to trade for Pence, Wandy, and Bourne. Hell, you can package all three and do an old-school mega deal. Either way, the only reason to trade somebody at the deadline is because they will be a FA next year and can walk for nothing... I don't buy the "desparate bidding war" argument all that much. Pence doesn't guarantee the Phillies a world series, or the Braves a playoff spot... and they know that.
while i don't agree with any of that, surely you can see that, in this case, it's different. he's the last available good bat on the market, and all indications are that all the teams looking for a righty OF agree. teams' agendas change in the offseason. they have no incentive to unload top prospects for somebody like pence, because they want to see how things shake out with what they have. an OF like pence will NEVER be a desperate need in the offseason for any team. certainly not one they will mortgage the farm for.
This thread is a huge tease when looking at the forum list because when it's the most recently commented on, it simply says "Astros reportedly..." I always excitedly click only to find out that it's just the Pence thread.
I wasn't complaining about how they are handling it, more so taking into question the articles I've been reading over the past week or so saying that Pence will not be moved. That is what I wasn't "buying/understanding", how reporters/insiders were already publishing reports that we were closing the door on trading him when there are still several days left before the deadline and they know damn well that one package can change everything. It just irked me reading articles that kept going back and forth about Pence being moved then definitely not being moved then back to being traded again, etc.
There's always a market for young/under contract outfielders. Most deadline trades involve either free agents or high priced talent (which Pence is neither). They're certainly shopping him, and will trade him if they get a good deal... but they don't need to panic and take what they can get just because there's a trade deadline.
I really hope it's true the Astros rejected Singleton, Cosart, +.. I feel like that's a heck of a package. So if we reject that and more teams get involved.. what can we reasonably expect for Hunter?
Hopefully the Braves and the Phillies will panic and start a bidding war to prevent Pence from going to the other's club.
http://brianmctaggart.mlblogs.com/2011/07/28/pence-could-be-on-the-move/ Pence could be on the move The Astros appear to be moving closer to trading All-Star right-fielder Hunter Pence, MLB.com has learned. As of Thursday afternoon, at least six teams are involved in negotiations to acquire Pence, according to a person close to the situation. No deal is imminent, and Astros general manager Ed Wade declined to comment when reached by MLB.com. The interest in Pence has picked up considerably since Carlos Beltran was acquired by the Giants from the Mets. KRIV-TV in Houston reported on its website Thursday the Reds, Phillies and Braves, along with three teams in the American League, are in the negotiations.
Hopefully they just clean house if they end trading Pence. Move Bourn, Barmes, Myers, and Wandy as well. You are going lose 110 games with those guys so might as well just stock up prospects and save money.
