all i'm going to say is "Who cares what color our players are" too much is made about this. I don't care about percentages in any sport. I just want to see the best athletes regardless of color or race or whatever.
Exactly. Hunter was a bum, and shouln't be guaranteed a roster spot based on a racial quota. It's not like the Astros are racially prejudiced. I mean look at all the minorities on our roster: Hidalgo, Dotel, Merced, Vizcaino, Carlos Hernandez, and Rosario.
My memory of Brian Hunter from back in the day.. I enjoyed watching the fielders any time James Mouton was at the plate and Hunter was on base. Once the ball was in play, some fielders would watch Hunter and not the ball. His reputation of speed caused more beneficial plays than him actually using it.
There are no black americans in mlb, except, what 30-40? I dunno? I can only name 4 Bonds Willis Grumpy Jr Kenny Lofton
Uhh... u kinda left out some semi-decent guys: Gary Sheffield Frank Thomas Cliff Floyd Garrett Anderson Derek Lee Jimmy Rollins Ray Durham ..there are several more, but i'm out of time.
American Born Blacks to be more specific. I don't think its that big a deal, but its an issue out there in the sports talk world.
Preston Wilson Vernon Wells Andruw Jones Trot Nixon Carlos Lee Carl Everett Mike Cameron Jay Payton Milton Bradley Torii Hunter Dmitri Young Eric Young Jaque Jones Michael Tucker Randy Winn Matt Lawton Rondell White Carl Crawford Reggie Sanders Shannon Stewart Marlon Anderson Marlon Byrd Bernie Williams Dave Roberts Junior Spivey
here's my problem with the whole "not enough blacks argument" i don't hear anyone saying "we need more whites in the NBA" That sport is dominated by African Americans and no one cares so who cares if baseball has few blacks. As i said earlier, skin color doesn't matter to me, i just want to see great athletes.
Ok now let's trade Biggio, Lane, and Robertson for Carlos Beltran and Jose Lima and I would be one very happy Black Astro fan. Go ahead and throw in Ausmus also.
Besides, I think by earlier standards set in this thread, Lima is not a black man either. He's Latino. Not that I really give a crap what race any player is......I just think the "American born black bias" dialogue is sorta tiresome on 610 these days. But thats for another forum, eh? Glad to see Hunter gone, I hated seeing him pinch hit, you knew it was going to be an out.
Lima is a Black Latino but I want him on our team because he is 7 and cero with a 2.15 ERA. The only persons race I ever mention on this board is mine and Charles Barkley's wife(see sig).
Trot Nixon is white, Andruw Jones and Bernie Williams are latino, and Carl Everett is just plain crazy.
i remember back in the day they were saying hunter could potentially be the next kenny lofton (who was awesome at the time). so much for that
My problem with your problem is that MLB doesn't attempt to promote it's game in the inner cities like the NFL and NBA. You're not seeing great black athletes in baseball because there's little effort being made to attract them to the game, instead we have teams building academies in Latin America where they can circumvent the draft. Even here in Houston, the Astros are horrible at marketing their product to our huge Hispanic population unlike the San Diego Padres for example. Baseball has dropped the ball in a major way.
