WWW Roy O goes for 16-0 all time against the Reds. That's freaking ridiculous. Berkman does what he always does in Cincy...hits the ball to Kentucky (which isn't as hard as it sounds)
Stros pitching staff as a whole is second in the major leagues in both number of ground balls forced and in ground ball/fly ball ratio; they lead the league in double plays turned. A middle infield of Burke & Biggio is just asking for trouble.
No, not at this time, but I would like to see how he handles himself there. He was an all american SS at Tennessee. This year Everett has been an entirely new man at the plate, like he has figured something out, and I hope it continues. But, if Burke plays well at SS and hits .300 and Adam slides back to his .240 average I would seriously consider it. I would rather have an offensive SS who makes all the routine plays than a defensive SS who adds little to the offense. DD
i felt this way in the offseason. it surprised me, because i've always been partial to incredible fielders...I was a far better defensive player than I was a hitter. but i don't agree with this anymore. everett's value as a defensive rock at SS is incredible...particularly on this team. their defense up the middle is great. and that's HUGELY valuable. i bought my adam everett t-shirt as penance.
Bully for you, man; I sucked no matter they put me. I thought was pretty good at bench chatter and spittin' seeds, though.
Huh? I think it is pretty much split down the middle on this one.....but whatever. Would you rather have Miguel Tejada, or Adam Everett? Would you rather have Alex Rodriquez or Adam Everett? Would you rather have Derek Jeter or Adam Everett? SS hitting over .300 in the ML this year Heck, would you rather have Dickie Thon (in his prime) or Adam Everett? This is my point, I think that a lot of teams would rather have a SS that makes the routine play buts adds some pop on offense. DD
How many of those guys were available to the Astros? Of course I take Miggy over Everett. Or Thon, who was a heavy-hitting SS when those weren't cool. But the discussion wasn't about that; it was about whether we should start a Burke at SS over AE just because of Burke's bat. The guys you name can actually play SS on the ML level. I'm seeing more and more evidence to the contrary as far as Burke is concerned--especially not on the level of those other guys, and certainly not on AE's level.
WLW unfortunately pettitte has the luck of not having run support this year as clemens did last year. cant deny burke's bat in the lineup, whether as ss or in the outfield, of course i prefer in the outfield because i think he will hit more doubles than wilson will hit homers keep winning each series at a time!
Fair enough, I just don't think we have enough of a sampling to see if he can play SS on a major league level. If David Eckstein can play SS, I have to believe Burke can too. DD
For what it's worth, the perception apparently differs from person to person. I thought it was a fairly difficult play for Burke to make, moving back, and it's not like the throw was that awful. First basemen dig balls like that out of the dirt all the time. It was one play (that wasn't all that awful), and people are trying to make way too big a deal out of it like it proves he can't play a reasonable SS.
