Yankees do nothing and now have Astros rolling into town with JV likely to start. I hear those Yankee diehards are going to hang their GM.
Franklin Perez (he was the big fish), Daz Cameron and Jake Rogers, who is the Tigers starting catcher. This feels like giving up more, TBH. Back then, we got Verlander without giving up Tucker, Martes, or Whitley (and very thankfully, though we didn't know at the time, Alvarez). We don't have that this time. We gave up our top 2 guys by a pretty decent margin, and both (especially Gilbert) are safer bets than any of those 3 (Perez & Cameron oozed potential, but injury concerns dogged Perez, and Cameron was always questionable if he'd hit enough). And don't get me wrong, Perez today would be our best prospect today, while Cameron and Rogers would still be in our top 10. Given what we'll save money wise, I'm happy with the deal. It not only makes us better for this year, but also gives us Verlander and $$$ to address other needs in 2024.
OK, I think this is an interesting perspective and I think you are right about it. The counterbalance is that the Mets GM and Cohen take a LASHING in the media if they don't move Verlander as a part of their rebuild. Cohen's image is very important and he'd take a beating if JV were on a last place squad.
Overpaid with what? Prospects are called prospects for a reason. We don’t know what they’re worth and I know they’re not worth more than JV for next 2.5 years. And the $54M.
Patrick Sandoval (Martin Maldonado, the 1st time around) Tony Kemp (Martin Maldonado, the 2nd time around) Josh Rojas (Greinke) Ramon Laureano (Brandon Bailey) Teoscar Hernandez (Francisco Liriano) Hernandez, Laureano, & Sandoval are all guys we'd have been better off keeping. There were 40-man roster considerations at play to why Laureano was moved.
so the answer is no. There's one all star in there from Teoscar in 2021 and ever since then hes been on the decline. And this year a very sharp one at 30 years old. the stros aren't missing any of those guys
welcome home JV! you too Kate! this is freaking awesome haha. should have used Tops Drop by Fat Pat doe
This is a good question. Very few would be considered a loss, even if extended back longer than 10 years, and even if you extended it to some guys with a little bit of MLB experience. Hader - this one hurt. For Carlos Gomez and Mike F'ing Fiers. Brett Phillips - has been pretty bad at the MLB level Adrian Houser - very average starter for the Brewers Vince Velasquez (already had a few games with the Astros) - turned into an average pitcher. Not a good pitcher. Johan Santana (Rule V pick, so not a trade, also longer than 10 years) - ouch
Houston's outlook for 2024-2027 went down by about 1 win/year after this trade. But that is a small price to pay if they win another ring. It really only means Crane might have to dig deep payroll-wise during 2025-2027 to find another ~$10M/yr to make up the difference. So while on paper this is a bad trade for Houston, in reality, it's a fair deal which becomes a good deal once you get beyond the statistical analysis.
