I always want the elite major league talent over prospects. Prospects are a crapshoot for the most part. Yes, some prospects are “can’t-miss” but it’s going to be unknown what most prospects will ultimately become. And no organization has made more correct calls than the Astros on the value of prospects since Crane took over. I trust Crane implicitly. If it’s good enough for Crane, it’s good enough for me.
Assuming JV's 3rd year becomes a guarantee and assuming the Mets cover 1/2 the contract, I think this trade roughly costs the team 1 win/yr from 2025-2027 but gains them roughly 2 wins this year; considering the benefit of near-term certainty and the playoffs, it is probably a roughly fair trade, again assuming NY eats half the contract and JV is guaranteed to be an astro thru 2025.
They got 2 guys who PROJECT to be studs. Of all fanbases, we should understand better than most that studs come in all shapes and sizes from the farm. There's too many variables to not strike when you're solidly in your window.
Is there some reason they money part of the deal hasn't been disclosed? Does that stuff have to clear the league office or something?
Whatever the Mets pay comes right off the top of CBT so the Astros can spend it on the bullpen orva backup catcher next year.
