honestly no. But based purely on visual estimation (which obviously isn't great), I'd have put him around 90 or so at best. Never seemed overpowering with the velocity
I was a big critic of the Stros for their stubbornness and lack of vision prior to the Oswalt & Berkman moves. And since then, they continue to improve in the right directions (i.e. Feliz deal). So yes, finally, they have adopted the right strategy. Their fun to follow again. And although their going to lose alot for a while, their is hope for the future again.
Good read on the Astros Dominican Academy prospects ... Dominican Summer League Astros Review The big hitter Ariel Ovando should start his first DSL Astro season next year.
This is kind of scary... That Michael Feliz pitcher says he's 16 and is 6-4 210 lbs. I wonder if his massive size at that age has any correlation to the PEDs that got him suspended 50 games
http://healthpsych.psy.vanderbilt.edu/HGH_kids.htm [rquoter] Human Growth Hormone (HGH) injections were initially created for children whose growth was stunted because of the small amount of growth hormone produced by the pituitary gland. [/rquoter] Until your bones fuse, HGH can massively effect your height. Gheorghe Muresan was as tall as he was because of a pituitary tumor which caused massive overproduction of HGH.
It wasn't HGH he got caught for using. Though I still did not know taking HGH could really effect your height that much. Interesting.
Stros claimed Matt Downs from the Giants, not a bad move at all. Downs is 26 and not a TRUE prospect but his minor league numbers are SOLID. He could be a valid candidate for an IF spot next season. Giants have been acquiring players left and right so when they picked up Cody Ross, Downs was the odd man out. Here is a link from the Giants message board, they apparently liked the kid... http://www.forums.mlb.com/n/pfx/forum.aspx?tsn=1&nav=messages&webtag=ml-giants&tid=124352
Jordan Lyles had a nice 6 IP, 0 ER game yesterday. Jiovanni Mier has been hitting quite well lately (14 for his last 33 for .424). Delino DeShields is playing pretty good at Greenville, too, hitting .326.
Could be a big deal for the Stros.... @KendallRogersYS: BTW, first-rounder Barret Loux becomes a free agent tomorrow. Look for it to take a few days to sign somewhere. Lots of interest. #mlbdraft
Hopefully the Astros go after him fairly aggressive if they like him and think he is healthy. They saved some money with the Oswalt and Berkman deals and also by not signing their 6th round pick. He is a local kid from Stratford so let's hope he was a Astros fan growing up.
I would be shocked if the Astros make a play for Barret Loux. Has there been any word on which teams are interested?
Why shocked? Ed Wade said they would look into it. http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/bb/7156870.html
Why would you be shocked? The Astros are in full rebuild mode (finally) and the kid's a higher prospect and from Houston. There's really no reason not to go after him except for Drayton to save money...
Interesting. I monitor crawfishboxes, this thread, and astros.com regularly and was under the impression that you guys were just speculating our interest. Nice to see word of it in the chron.
"We'll look into it," Wade said. "We'll do our due diligence and decide if he's someone who's in our best interest." To me it just sounds like a vague, general statement any GM would say about the kid. I wouldn't go off classifying our interest as high or anything.
I forget were I read it but I believe he was one of the guys they were considering at #8 and had tons of interest in him. It makes to much sense for them not to consider it, looking at the path that the club has chosen to take.
Yep. It's good to see it, too, finally. DeShields was on a mad hitting streak (at least 10+) until yesterday when he had an 0-for-4 day (but with 1 BB and 1 R). Foltynewicz has settled down too with 14 straight scoreless innings (well, 2 unearned runs).
