Am excited that the Astros have a chance to sign FOUR first round players (if you include Ovando, which I do) So much for having the worst farm system in the bigs
@richardjustice: Astros spent $7.2 million. RT @jimcallisBA: Avg MLB draft spending was $6.5m per team. #hounews Also take into account the millions we spent in the international market.
Not to mention what they'll pay for Barret Loux. I really hope they get him signed, injured or not. That would make (essentially) 4 1st round picks this year.
I really hope so, I get the feeling we are getting him. If they do deal Blum and don't pick up his remaining salary then we could reallocate his money to the Barret Loux fund.
can we all officially acknowledge the Astros "get it" now? sometimes hitting bottom is what needs to happen.
I agree, hopefully some of these picks will pan out. The way Heck is moving guys through the system, we'll see some of these guys a lot sooner than we're accustomed to. Anyone know if Ariel Ovando is playing in the DSL? The Crawfish Boxes give daily minor league updates, but I never see stats for him listed.
Looks like we managed to dump Pedro Feliz for another minor league pitcher, this time from the Cardinals: David Carpenter. Feliz was completely useless, so this is probably a good move since it saves a lil' money (though I am unconcerned with Uncle Drayton's pocketbook) even if Carpenter doesn't pan out into an MLB reliever. In other news, Mazella has been in the minors during his rehab assignment working on a change to his swing that Jeff Bagwell suggested. He hit .366 with an OPS of .908 during the assignment, better than he's been in even the minors before.
AppyAstros Delino Deshields Jr. goes 4 for 4 with 2 doubles, BB, and 2 RBI. T. Nash with a homer & double, 4 RBI. G-stros win game 1 13-5
ValleyCats Newly added rookie Austin Wates (@austinwates) is starting tonight - batting 9th, DH Looks like the Stros are going to fast track their new blood, Wates already at Tri-City and their recent movements of other draft picks makes me smile.
went out and saw Lyles pitch today!! solid, though he wasn't missing a ton of bats. I wasn't watching constantly (there's a bar, what can you do?) but it did seem like he was able to induce groundballs a lot when he wanted to. Either way, cool to see
Did you see what type of velocity he had? I think I read his fastballs are usually 89-91 mph. He had zero strikeouts but still is only 19 years at AAA which is very rare.
2009 3rd round pick 3rd baseman Jonathan Meyer went 404 at bats this season without a homerun. During the last two games, he has hit 2.
