I didn't really care about Plutko. I'm glad the Astros didn't way overpay a guy with so many questions.
To be fair we haven't any issues signing players sense Heck/Wade took over. The kid going to UCLA had his heart set on it from the beginning and the Stros would have had to go WAY over slot to even make the kid think about it and who knows if they actually did. Jacoby Jones wasn't coming here but it was a nice attempt to catch lightening in a bottle. Other then that, they have signed all their picks that needed to be signed and look out for Rodney Quintero the Stros 25th rd pick dude appears to be able to throw in the upper 90s.
Also, don't forget about the 16 year old kid from Latin America that they essentially paid first round money for.
I think it's a little silly to say you don't care about a 6th round draft pick. I wish the Astros would have at least gotten their first 10 picks signed, but I'm not declaring the draft a failure because of one person. Still, would have been nice to have another potential prospect in the farm.. you can never have too many.
I don't care about not signing him. The more I heard about him the more I wanted the Astros to not sign him. They took a flyer on a high risk guy they knew probably wouldn't sign. Not a big deal at all to not sign a 6th round pick. Go look at the Yankees and Red Sox and see how many guys they haven't signed.
Compared to the draft where we didn't sign Drietrich, Heibner or Chad Jones and our highest pick was Colin Delome (5th round), failing to sign a 6th round pick is no big deal at all.
Compared to a pile of ****, Carlos Lee's defense isn't that bad. Apologies if I'm coming across as the "here we go again" type -- I'm happy with this draft so far (as much as you can be without seeing them develop), but that doesn't change the disappointment in not signing a 6th round draft pick. I'll take every draft pick we can get, especially those in the first 10 rounds. I think we can all agree we'd prefer to not be in the 7%, which is why I say it's dumb to say "I didn't want to sign Plutko anyways!"
7% is pretty much 1 pick per team, which is shaping up to be what our draft would be. 10 signings out of 11 in the top 10 rounds. I'm just f'in glad it wasn't Folty or DD Jr that decided to hold out. Given how bad our farm system is, I completely understand wanting to see the Astros capitalize on every opportunity to improve but believe it or not this was a good draft signing wise. Maybe not a great draft, but a good one. The majority of the unsigned picks are not high picks.
darrylslater As for OF Austin Wates, who was picked in the third round by the Astros? "Still negotiating," Hughes wrote in a text message
Side note - Haudricourt Brewers scouting director Bruce Seid just told me that talks have broken off with 1st round pick Dylan Covey. I'm working on the details. REALLY bad for a team in desperate need of pitching.
Sorry, wayyyy off topic(and nothing important) but panel favors Astros in Chacon case. http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl...(chron.com+-+Top+Stories)&utm_content=Twitter
Amazing, didn't even know they still had anything working with that. I guess if you choke your boss, you probably shouldn't expect your remaining salary.
Do you'll think Harper will sign with the Nationals, yes or no? If he doesn't, should the Astros lose on purpose and see if a few teams pass on him next year?
@richardjustice: Astros spent $7.2 million to get their 35 2010 draft picks signed. In 2009, they spent $5.5 million on 36 picks. #hounews
