Lyles had an ok start but kind of struggled. 5 innings 2 ER 7 hits 93 pitches but he was in trouble in the 1st, 2nd and 5th (DP got him out of a bases loaded jam). If anything he showed poise and ability to survive without his best stuff, besides that nothing much else going on. JD Martinez got another hit in 3ABs, Cartwright got 1 in 4 abs on a bunt and Gaston was hitless. RR had a pretty bad night, Shuck had a no hits but did draw a walk, nothing more to report on the Express. Villar continues to impress with another double, rbi and SB in 3 ABs. Mier continues to struggle with another hitless night and Bushue got rocked a bit. Tri-city had a nice performance from Carlos Quevedo who threw 7.2 innings of 2 run 4 hit ball.
WOW...as I was writing the minor league update I saw the tweet come through. Interesting since he didn't have his best stuff, like I pointed out, but showed good poise.
What's wrong with a September call up for a cup of coffee. It doesn't start the clock on any of his tenure. Let him throw a few pitches to major leaguers for the heck of it.
absolutely...removes a ton of pressure from what is going to be a nervous experience for him, anyway. come up...pitch a game or two...have fun...no pressure, because we're not playing for anything...if it doesn't work out, don't sweat it...you're a teenager and we still have more time in the minors to get you ready. that's about the best situation for a call-up i can imagine.
I don't support bringing 19 year olds up to the big leagues. There is only one reason to call him up this year and that is to sell a few extra tickets.
Or to give him the feel of a major league clubhouse and experience so it isn't such a shock to the system when he truly is ready. They can call him up and let him throw a couple of innings or not even pitch him at all. Just let him be there to soak it in.
How is that any different then next year? Nobody expects us to be playing for anything then. Let him continue to work on his breaking ball and his changeup, and call him up next year.
Agree, unless the kid is Tim Lincecum in September and ST 2011 then he will start in RR next year. Let the kid get some exposure, throw him a couple of games 2 to 3 innings in relief every 5th day and let him get a feel for the big leagues. I'd say this, if Coop was still in charge NO FREAKING WAY I'd bring him up but I like Mills and Arnsberg's approach so far a lot better.
If Lyles does get called up in Sept, he will be the first Astro born in the 1990's Born: October 19, 1990 He's only thrown 127 innings at this point. He'll probably get 5 or 6 starts at Round Rock, which will put him likely just above where he was last year (144 IP), so it's not like there's a chance of overuse. There's little to no downside of giving him a taste of what he's working towards.
Bringing him up in September will also show other prospects that the Astros are willing to get you to the big leagues early in your career if it is deserved. It could be the difference between signing a draft choice or not. They used Castro's quick rise to the majors when negotiating with DeShields.
I am actually a tad more curious if they will bring up a pitcher from Lancaster to replace Lyles at AA? Really there are three candidates with Dallas Keuchel being the favorite, he is having a great season in that pitcher's hell and is 22 so the time is now to make his move. They might move Seaton up but he has been so inconsistent and same goes for Kyle Greenwalt although he has pitched a lot better lately. IF they thought Tanner Bushue at Lexington had good enough stuff they could skip him but I doubt they would make that kind of leap with him.
Ah, makes sense, I have started following the minors more closely only recently so I may have missed an item or two.
