I strongly agree with your general point about the unpredictability of prospects, but this signing is exceptional for the organization. Signing a 16-yr old for almost three million dollars is far from business as usual. Teams draft and sign oodles of players with the hope that some of them won't just be minor-league roster fillers, but they have a different set of expectations for the kids who command first-round money.

This move should calm those fans who are upset that Heck and Wade didn't draft Josh Sale. Just looking at the video, Ovando is the most eye-popping prospect I've seen the Astros sign in a very long time. Very, very exciting.

I'm just guessing here, but the thinking is probably that a move to Lancaster would be more lateral for a hitter of his caliber but the jump to CC right now might be too much, and he still needs to improve his defense. At 23 he's still younger than all the outfielders on the Hooks roster.

Oh absolutely. I'm a huge fan of these signings. My view of rebuilding is to go out and get rid of the fluff on the major league team (the Lyons and Feliz's) and put out a cheaper MLB roster but use all that money to sign a dozen of these types of guys.

Thank you for looking at the games before his week long slump, and the 5-5 game after it to pad those numbers. He had taken Ofers for 5 of the 6 games before his 5-5. He hadn't been through that all season. I don't think he had back to back hitless games until then. I don't recall saying he was in some deep slump, or that he sucked. I expect baseball to have ups and downs, I just was commenting that he had been in a small slump.

    Jordan Lyles in Futures Game

Easy delivery with clean mechanics. Knows how to pitch and can locate the fastball well. Velocity wasn't too impressive at 86-89mph and topped at 92mph. Looks like he has more in the tank when he needs it. Really effortless delivery. Changeup will probably be his strikeout pitch in the majors. Really good movement and change of speed at around 78-82mph. Really good sinking movement on it as well. Curveball is average at best. Big and loopy with good movement but doesn't have the sharp bite to be a real strikeout pitch.

He's still developing physically and could/should add more velocity as he fills out. Very lanky with long limbs.

He might not be the type of prospect his numbers would suggest, but he should be a solid #3 with potential to be a #2 pitcher.

Promptly went 2-3, he might be the best hitter in the organization (majors included) he just flat out rakes. If he tears it up at Corpus, he should be given a chance to make the big league club out of spring training but he'll probably have to wait until the dead weight in Left field is gone though.

Does service time start when they do Sept. call ups? I've never been sure about this.

Wright would be on the proper 4 days rest, Lyles would only have 3 days rest if he started Tuesday. I don't think you want Lyles making his ML debut on 3 days rest.

I agree. I see no way Lyles starts on 3 days rest. Wes Wright has been nasty in July so hopefully he has turned a corner in his first season as a starter.

Michael Kvasnicka has had a terrible start this his pro career. I remembering seeing him versus and he had a nice swing from the left side. According to his profile on MILB.com, he now only bats from the right side. Anybody know why he isn't a switch hitter anymore?

I read that the Astros scouts think he has well-below-average power from the left side. Apparently, from watching him in BP, balls that he would deposit in the parking lot from the right side would barely make it to the warning track from the left.

They should have known that before they drafted him if that is the case. I saw him versus ASU at the regional’s and he was on fire from the left side. A big part of his appeal to me was the fact he was a switch hitter. Right-handed college hitters don’t get drafted very high.

Troy Patten had elbow issues, we never got to see what he could have been.
